Canon 40D - about to be launched?
Posted: 20 Feb 2007
Canon 40D speculation mounts - Speculation on the internet is reaching fever pitch, just days before an official press event, that Canon are about to announce a replacement for the Canon EOS 30D in the form of the 40D.
With just two days to go before Canon officially revealed
their Spring line-up of cameras, speculation on the arrival of a EOS
40D, as replacement for the 8Mp 30D, is rife. As was revealed on the
EPZ forums, one Belgium photographic retailer was advertising the 40D
with the following detail and specification. Until Thursday when all
will be made clear, this is what may be the details
of an exciting release from Canon.
Realise your photographic vision with the EOS 40D. Speed and precision in a tough magnesium alloy body, with access to over 60 EF lenses and the range of EOS accessories for unlimited creativity.
Specifications
Designed to inspire. Built to last.
CMOS sensor
An 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor provides the sensitivity needed for clean, detailed images with fine colour gradation. Large sensor pixels allow for wide dynamic range and reduced noise at higher ISO speeds. The 22.5 x 15mm sensor size adds an effective 1.6x increase to the focal length of EF lenses, extending reach at the telephoto end.
5 fps shooting
The camera delivers fast 5 fps shooting for continuous bursts of up to 30 large JPEG images (11 in RAW). A new 3 fps shooting mode provides greater control for variable-speed sequences.
Large LCD
Illuminated by 6 LEDs, the bright 2.5 Inch 230K pixel LCD is viewable from 85° in almost all directions.
Picture Style
Picture Style pre-sets provide easy control over image processing parameters. Each style offers a different colour response - similar to the way film types are changed to achieve different effects. Sharpness, contrast, colour tone and saturation are adjustable within each pre-set.
Spot metering
Spot metering allows you to base the optimal exposure value on a concentrated spot (3.5%) in the scene - useful in high-contrast scenes where precise metering control is required.
High precision 9-point wide-area AF
Select from one of nine fixed focusing points across the scene for fast, accurate focusing even with off-centre subjects and 'rule-of-thirds' compositions.
DIGIC II
DIGIC II renders colours with precision and accuracy. Fast and efficient, DIGIC II prolongs battery life* and delivers instant 0.15 second start up time.
Digital Photo Professional software
The Digital Photo Professional software permits high-speed processing of lossless RAW images.
Magnesium alloy body
A compact magnesium alloy body provides durability while keeping the camera's weight down to 700 grams.
EF lenses and accessories
The EOS 40D is compatible with over 60 EF lenses (including the EF-S Series) and all EX Series Speedlite flash units. The E-TTL II flash algorithm passes key shooting data from compatible EF lenses - such as focal length, point of focus and distance information - to the Speedlites for consistently accurate flash exposures. Untethered shooting is possible with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E1.
Connectivity
Video Out allows reviewing on a TV screen. Connect with USB 2.0 Hi-speed for fast data transfers.
*750 shots per battery charge, according to CIPA standard testing.

The spec is about what everyone is expecting - the only question is 'when'?

Poor ol' Katie
Not sure anything new would come out that would "excite" me. A few more megapixels, a faster shot-per-second etc. Big deal. I'm still more than amazed by my icky-little Nikon D50...!
Anybody who needs more than Canon's current 30D will be edging towards the pro end anyway, and so they'd go further up the model range?

There are a lot of Canon owners who are getting very excited about it. Personally, I'm a bit more excited to see what the Fuji S5 can do. And I still find my D200 exciting when i get it out of the bag... but then I'm sad like that!

I'm sure to get a 40D if everything that's promissed comes true. It should sit nicely alongside my current 5D. Unless of course the 6D comes before the end of the year. Personally I can't wait for the Canon G5s Mark IIn.

Who cares, its the person behind the camera that makes the camera really work. People spend to much time trying to get the latest kit.
I upgraded from a 10D to a 30D and it was the biggest mistake i made as i had so many dust problems with it.
Lets hope they have sorted the dust problems out now.

I totally agree with your comment Mike.
My 10D still works perfectly well but I require top image quality in order to sell my work to publishers. I still use my 10D occasionally but it's really just for 'Grab shots' when the 5D is attached to the wrong lens. Some of these grab shots turn out to be real winners but if the image quality isn't there then I'm pretty limited to what can be done with it. And God help me if I've shot over ISO 100!! With the newer cameras coming out I could probably get away with much more and the quality of these cameras up to about ISO 400 is amazing.

Indeed, except the spot meter won't folow the AF point, and it won't support wireless flash straight out of the box. These are both things I use everyday.
I bet it'll be more expensive n'all.

BTW, Nikon's announcements won't come until 6th March/PMA! Then Canon will have to play catch up again!

Shame? It's my job! Nikon made their announcements yesterday for the CoolPix range, but they also have a press event on 5th March, where we might see other new stuff. As this is after the Canon launch which is tomorrow, i don't see how Canon will be playing catch up.

Canon announce a contender for the D200 Crown. Two weeks later, Nikon annouce something newer than the D200. (I'm speculating)
Therefore, Canon are trying to catch up again! Simple really!

Tell me, how many people out there know there camera inside out and can use it to its full potential, i bet 20 people out of 100 not many. So why all the fuss on whats coming out next week.
Posted: 21 Feb 2007 - 12:23
I've had my 20D two years and got to say I'm honest enough to say that I still don't know my camera inside out and that I'm learning new things with it on a regular basis.
Posted: 21 Feb 2007 - 12:31
I agree with Hobbs I'm 15,000+ shots into my 20D and I'm stil finding new things out about it. (Note to self - must read the manual).

Maybe some people would like things on a new camera that they don't have on thier current one though which is the point in bringing out new ones?
I sure as heck don't know (or want/need to know) what all the settings do on my 10D but I do know I can't get more than 6.2m pixels out of it which isn't good enough for me to print above A4 (or for stock agencies)so as far as I'm concerned as soon as something good with a higher pixel count that I can afford comes out I'm going for it.
I'm not saying that the rumoured specs of the rumoured 40D are what I'm after though!

Not really, totally impossible as this price point. There is the 5D if that is really necessary. 5D is good.

nah, it's all about marketing and persuading individuals to part with money. keeping th esame models on th emarket does not create new users only aflat market. By markets small tweaks along the range here and there the cameras look more and more interesting.
Let face hter i snever much difference form one model to the next, but if you skip a couple of generations (10D to 40D for example) then there will be a significant difference. The can be seen across many markets!
Posted: 21 Feb 2007 - 16:56
I think it would be the type of upgrade that would be good for me, as I'm looking at leaving my 300D behind, but then I do keep looking at the 5D and the 1D

Hm... just noticed it doesn't mention about the anti-dust gadgety thing that the 400D has. Not really that necessary IMO but presumed all new canon's would come with that feature now? Or have they decided it's not much good and scrapped the idea?

I must admit I have been a Canon user from over 16 years, started with the EOS100F, progressed to the EOS and 5 wow what a jump. Then to the D60 in 2003 again wow, then to the 20D (dropped my D60 and my insurance company said your model is no longer made you will have to have a 20D - oh ok, whats that!! Again a big difference. I dont subcribe to the 'ohh its new and has more buttons'. The 20D has been a great camera - over 20,000 shots now and not a single problem other than dust now and again. As for all the hype about the 40D yes it will be better than the 30D in a number of areas but to all of those who are waiting for some kind of galactic advance in capability then its not a 40D you want you need to look towards the Pro range, or perhaps you looking for a camera that will do it all for you, if so go and buy a disposable. I for one am looking to upgrade to the 1DMk3 when it comes out; However at the end of the day as has already been said it makes no difference how expensive your gear is if the person pressing the button is a dougnut and is unable to compase a picture.
