Photosynth - Microsoft Live Labs
· 7 Jun 2007
Fly around Britain in 3D - The BBC is collaborating with Microsoft Live Labs to render famous locations with photographs that can be zoomed in and out of.
Press release:
The BBC is collaborating with Microsoft Live Labs Photosynth to create three-dimensional representations of some of the most dramatic buildings in Britain by combining hundreds of different photographs. This is an exciting 'research and development' project which gives users an insight into future photo sharing possibilities. Most of these locations are featured in the new BBC series How We Built Britain which explores Britains' past through its buildings and the lives lived in and around them. Imagine hundreds of photos of the same building being seamlessly stitched together to create an experience where the user can follow their own path zooming in to see the smallest decorative detail or zooming out and panning through 360 to place the building in a wider context.
The locations span one thousand years of British architecture. The Trafalgar Square collection includes archive images from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the National Media Museum. You can see the project in action here.
