RSPCA Young Photographer Awards

Young photographers are lining up their lenses once again for a prestigious annual competition, which could see their work showcased at a glitzy awards ceremony.

The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2007, sponsored by Olympus and printing company Warners Midlands, attracts thousands of entries each year, offering prizes including an RSPCA photoshoot and top Olympus cameras – and produces an amazingly high standard of photographs.

Wildlife photographer, TV personality and competition judge Chris Packham said: "It’s fantastic being part of what has become such a prestigious competition, and I think the recognition that these young photographers are now receiving is nothing more than they deserve.”

“No doubt this year – with the addition of a new category - we will receive even more entries that show what a nation of animal lovers and great photographers we are.”

Anyone aged 18 and under can enter their photographs, taken anywhere, of any animal! There are age categories for under 12s and 12–18s, plus a new category for 2007 – Pet Personalities.

All winners will receive top Olympus cameras, plus an overall winner will get the chance to go on an RSPCA photoshoot. The Olympus portfolio prize, is awarded to the person whose collection of five photos shows great promise.

Chris Packham added: “We want to see pictures of animals of all kinds, in all types of situations, from wildlife to insects to birds."

“Through our new category, pet personalities, we want young photographers to realise that a great picture may be right under their nose. You don’t need to tour the world to get the perfect picture – your lazy cat, daft dog or happy hamster may help you on your way to a brilliant prize”

Entrants should remember that it will be the quality of the pictures that do the talking. Pets don’t need funny clothes to give them a personality – animals doing what comes naturally, is what the judges will be looking for.
