'Smile!' photography competition winner announced
Posted: 3 Sep 2009
Do you have a reason to smile? - The Daily Mirror's Picture Editor and Staff Photographer have chosen the winner for the Smile photography competition.
Without further ado... the winner of a photography kit jam-packed with over £1,400 of goodies is John Llywarch (john61704b). John's image, you might smile, but it's my toe!, was chosen because it captures the theme 'Smile!' perfectly.
The judges said: "The standard of photography was outstanding. The images covered many aspects of photography from great timing, precision lighting and focusing through to clever ideas and effects.
This month the theme was 'Smile' and all the images had an uplifting or comedy feel to them. We studied them on the monitors at the Mirror picture desk, which caused some interest from the editors and journalists who all had their ideas of who should win.
John's image is pin sharp and nicely exposed in the slightly awkward side lighting. It's images like this that become timeless and go on to be a historical testament to the era in which it was taken. It's a spontaneous and perfectly captured image of a happy moment in time."
John's image was a candid snap taken from a collection he had produced. It was the image's unusualness that made him enter the competition.
"It's a shot you don't see very often so I thought I'd give it a go,” explained John, "I didn't expect to win! It's very good news, it's made my day!"
Well done John!
