The hysteria surrounding people photographing children continues to grow

Elderly photographer branded a paedophile - Taking pictures of an empty paddling pool has landed one lady in hot water.

Could this sort of image bring you trouble?

An elderly lady was asked to stop taking photographs of a empty paddling pool because a park official thought she may be a paedophile.

Betty Robinson was out for a day trip with her friend Brenda Bennett to see an ocean liner leaving Southampton docks and on the way home she decided to take some pictures in the cities common. The fenced off paddling pool was completely deserted but still a female official ordered her to stop taking photographs of the pool.

Only last week was another person stopped from taking photographs at a local show in fear he may be a paedophile when really he was out with his family and only wanted to take a picture of his children having a good time.

The issue was also raised in the House of Lords by the Countess of Mer who said: "All of us who have children or grandchildren like to photograph them. Is it not time that the hysteria that has built up was quelled?"

Southampton City Council have now apologised about the incident and said it was trying to safeguard youngsters.

They also said that staff would now be advised to use more discretion.

Yeah! I read that transcript from this debate, Have to say I was impressed at those participating, There was some really down to earth & sensible views, Something you don't get in the Commons very often, If at all.....!

One titled speaker even reffered to the woman who started the trouble around the guy photographing his own kids, As " crazy woman " Yes the exact words used.......

It's about time this hysteria was dealt with, The debate went further and discussed the " Cavalier " attitude of security company staff, Mentions of over sttepping thier authority.....etc etc....!

Time will tell.......!

The person who told the ladies to stop taking photographs has not lost their job.

I do street and environmental portrait photography, mostly in B&W, using a Leica M6, a Hasselblad 500 c/m and a Nikon D50 for the occasional digital shot. I used to have 200 plus photos on here but I radically clean up my portfolio every now and then, bringing it all ba...

The person who told them to stop was a staff member working on instructions. It's the obsession with intimacy, privacy and fear of abuse that threatens citizens' rights and cherished activities really. The person should not be sacked but instructed. As should all in similar roles. And at the level of legislation we should not let our obsession with abuse undermine the value of freedom we all cherish so much.
