Press Release:

The winners of the AOP Assistant Awards were announced last night at a packed Prize Giving Ceremony at the AOP Gallery in London. The Judges awarded 9 Winners and 11 Merits plus the Assistant of the Year Award, which went to Mike Whelan for his Ad-Sites Project.

Mike won a selection of fantastic prizes including a commissioned job with MOT Models, £1000 worth of insurance for a year with Towergate Camerasure, equipment hire from Direct Lighting / Metro Imaging, a day’s studio hire from Street Studios with free lighting and a portfolio critique by Angela Woods and Melissa Bones from Hothouse.

The panel of Judges loved the concept behind Mike’s Project and photographer Tara Moore commented, “Mike’s project had everything: originality, humour, technique and composition. It was a pleasure to judge!” Mike also won a Merit in the Interiors & Architecture Series category.

The AOP Assistants Awards were launched in 1990 to recognize the potential of the AOP Assistant Membership and showcase the next generation of professional photographers. Regarded by the industry as the most prestigious awards programme for photographers’ assistants, they have over the years promoted thousands of images from hundreds of up-and-coming photographers. This year saw a record number of entries and, as always, the standard was exceptionally high so it was a difficult task for the Judges to select the final 87 images that make up the 2009 exhibition, showing at the AOP Gallery from 6th – 16th October.
