SWPP awardsDarren Chaplin went along to the SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers) awards in Hammersmith, London last night and walked away with the accolade of UK Press & PR Photographer of the Year 2008. He's been an EPZ member for the last two years and says members critiques and support have really helped him.

"Needless to say I am proud of this achievement and would like to thank all of you who have helped me in one way or another over the past year and I look forward to working with you again soon."

Darren entered the competition to compare his work with some of the best professional photographers from the UK and abroad. He won the title with an image from the Rugby World Cup Final of 2007, something he thought he could do but as he was against some photographers who he thought were really in their prime and producing brilliant images it wasn't until they announced his name that he really believed it.

"When they announce the category your heart is pounding and your mouth goes dry and then they announce your name.  I was so nervous I went straight up on stage, received the award and walked off quickly as I didn't want to have to give a speech."

Darren who runs his own gallery and studio is now working towards more nominations and would like to concentrate on portraiture and develop his skills so he can turn his love for photography into a full time business.
