On the face of it, going to a living museum does not seem a cool thing for the keen photographer to do. Yes, fine for a family and school parties but not for the serious snapper. The reality, however, is very different and you can have a great day out with the camera, as I did when I went to the Black Country Living Museum. The volunteers who dress the part were brilliant, the place is well organized, parking is easy, the beer was good and the fish and chips even better. It was so good I thought a ePHOTOzine meet there would be great so if you are interested please see the meet's page and come along if you can for a day of photo fun.

For details of the museum, please see www.bclm.co.uk.

Gear
You can do most things with a DSLR and standard zoom, but a wide-angle zoom and a telezoom would be handy. A flashgun might be handy too.

On the face of it, a tripod seems a good idea but not fair nor practical at the height of the season when the place is busy. Perhaps fine off-peak.

Technique

Key thing is to keep an eye on your ISO and other settings to ensure you shoot at fast enough shutter speeds to avoid camera shake. You could use on-camera flash but if you do, you need a diffuser – Honl, Lastolite, Gary Fong Lightsphere, Interfit Strobies, Stofen or something similar.

I shot using natural light in Raw format so if contrast got out of hand I could tame it back on the computer.

Final thing I would add is to still to ask your subject before shooting. It is polite, even though the volunteers expect it.
