A travel photographer has been banned from entering Sri Lanka, missing out on great photo opportunities because he has a tattoo of the Buddha on his arm.

Antony Ratcliffe, ePHOTOzine member Ezo, from Nottingham, told the BBC he was “Shocked and upset” after being refused entry to the country, which has strict rules on references to the Buddha.

Antony is a follower of the Buddhist philosophy and had the tattoo done as a mark of his beliefs. After being detained for an hour and a half, he was finally allowed to continue his journey to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, facing further questions when he arrived.

Antony described the experience as “A waste of time”. He was only in Sri lanka for a twelve hour stop over on the way to Malaysia.

The UK foreign office recommends that travellers “don't pose for photographs by standing in front of a statue of Buddha”, and reminds travellers that mistreatment of Buddhist images and artefacts is a serious offence.
