The Hunter
'The Hunter' by ianrobinson

The winner of the Canon EOS 70D we had up for grabs in our September 'Wildlife' competition has been announced.

Congratulations go to ianrobinson, for his stunning image 'The Hunter', of a barn owl flying low over some reeds.

The image was taken in Rocklands, Norfolk. "Rocklands is a wonderful place for all types of raptor", says Ian. "The best time to see raptors is from January to March as they are forced to come out in the day to feed."

"I was camouflaged, with a net over myself and the camera, to take the shot", says Ian. "I had to wait for about an hour in the treeline for the owl to appear. I positioned myself specifically to capture the beautiful light on the wings."

Ian is in cabinetry by trade, but has always been into photography. His passion for the subject was sparked five years ago by a friend. "I have always been an artistic person and have always loved wildlife, so I married the two together", says Ian.

Ian has a few top tips for anyone looking to have a go at owl and raptor photography:
  • A long lens is essential. It doesn't have to be terribly expensive, but it does help.
  • Use camouflage, and get there earlier than your subject is due to arrive to avoid scaring them away. I hugged the treeline for this shot, for extra cover.
  • Patience is key, and this is why it helps to research the behaviour of the subject, so you know when and where it's likely to appear.
Congratulations to all those shortlisted too, your images all summed up the 'Wildlife' theme perfectly. Take a look at the competition page to see all the shortlisted entries.

Well done Ian, and enjoy your new camera! To see more stunning Canon images, take a look at the Canon Gallery

Everything about this shot is beautiful. The light on the wings gives a look of porcelain and the rimlight around the head is fabulous. I could go on, but a very worthy winner.

A well-deserved winner that is made even more impressive by the explanation of the planning and understanding that went into it. Not only are you fortunate to have such opportunity but have the skill to take advantage.
