Canon have introduced the PowerShot G3 - the third generation model in the 'G' series line-up. Aimed at the advanced amateur and semi-professional user, the PowerShot G3 offers a 4x zoom lens, a new digital imaging core (DIGIC) processor and 4 Megapixel CCD sensor.
The PowerShot G3 builds on the award winning PowerShot G2, which was recently voted European Digital Camera of the Year Award 2002 by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), to offer users increased photographic functionality and control.
The PowerShot G3 features a newly designed, high quality, 4x zoom lens (35mm film equivalent - 35-140mm) with a fast f2.0 - 3.0 aperture and is the first 4x zoom lens on a Canon PowerShot digital camera. The fast f2.0 - 3.0 aperture ensures superb picture quality even in low light situations and the 4x zoom provides the user with a wider range of viewpoints.
The PowerShot G3 delivers high definition and fast processing with the new 'DIGIC' imaging processor designed specifically to enhance picture quality, improve AF accuracy and speed of operation.
'DIGIC is not just a cosmetic change', says Mark Robinson, Marketing Manager, Canon Consumer Imaging. 'This innovative development has allowed us to improve the image quality and camera performance significantly enabling us to meet the increasing photographic needs of the advanced amateur and semi-professional user.'
Canon's innovative DIGIC processor works by combining the six key elements of CCD Control, AE/AF/AWB, signal processing, JPEG compression, memory card control and LCD monitor display, to deliver high quality images and lengthened battery life due to the increase in the speed of processing.
The highest quality RAW mode is now accessible even when shooting in JPEG. Immediately after taking a shot the image is displayed on the LCD, the user simply can then simply select the function button and change the JPEG file to store as a RAW file. This provides the user with more options for editing and processing on a computer.
'Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space' (iSAPS) is another new addition which allows the PowerShot G3 to deliver exceptional images. With iSAPS technology the scene focussed on and shooting information are analysed and cross-referenced against Photographic Space data. Photographic Space data is a vast library of statistical information built into every new Canon digital camera. By taking advantage of the Photographic Space, the PowerShot G3's performance parameters are optimised and the output image is how the user intended it to be.
Flexibility and Creativity
Designed for true creativity and flexibility the PowerShot G3 combines a host of advanced Canon technologies to deliver outstanding image quality and operability in every shooting situation.
Featuring 12 shooting modes including two new custom modes, manual control, selectable focusing points and metering modes the PowerShot G3 ensures that technology need not hamper creativity. The PowerShot G3 also features FlexiZone AF/AE which means there's complete control of the position of the focus and exposure point in the viewfinder frame, ideal for off-centre and even on-the-edge compositions.
The PowerShot G3 has the most comprehensive auxiliary flash system of any digital compact camera in the world. The PowerShot G3 is compatible with the complete range of Speedlite EX flashes including the Macro-Ring Lite MR-14EX and the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX. Furthermore, the PowerShot G3 offers maximum flexibility using the optional lenses available including both a 0.7x wide converter and a new 1.75 x tele-converter.
Directly connectable to all Canons' Direct Printers: CP-10, CP-100, Bubble Jet S820D, S830D, S530D, the PowerShot G3 delivers superb quality photo images totally bypassing the need for a PC. Simply connect the camera to a Canon direct printer; select the desired shot and a full colour 4 x 6' or A4 size photo is easily printed in minutes.
Design and Ergonomics
A new 'Main Dial' has been added to the handgrip of the PowerShot G3 for ease of movement. This main dial is similar to that on the EOS system cameras and has the effect of increasing/decreasing the value of selected features.
An vari-angled 1.8-inch LCD monitor provides the user with 100% coverage. The LCD monitor can be independently positioned to view the scene regardless of the position of the camera and when the LCD monitor is rotated towards the front for self-portraits a mirror image is displayed for correct viewing.
More information has been added to the information LCD situated on the top of the PowerShot G3 to increase usability of the camera, especially when the main colour LCD screen is turned off.
The PowerShot G3 is compatible with both PC and Mac and has a full suite of advanced software.
New ZoomBrowzer EX 4.0 - essential for image management, the new ZoomBrowser EX files, prints and even transfers images to a computer effortlessly.
