Canon IXUS 500 HS / ELPH 520 HS in Red

Canon announced two new Canon IXUS models, known as Canon ELPH in the US, however, just to add to the confusion they use different model numbers in the US. Here we have a look at the US versions, which are identical apart from the label. The Canon IXUS 500 HS aka Canon ELPH 520 HS is unique in that it's an ultra compact with a 12x optical zoom lens, it's also the first Canon camera to use microSD. The IXUS 500 HS has a compact lens that extends very little out of the camera body whether using the wide setting or the telephoto setting.

The Canon IXUS 125 HS aka, the Canon ELPH 110 HS features an ultra compact body, a wider than normal 24mm 5x optical zoom lens and Full HD video recording. Both models feature Face ID where you can tell the camera to prioritise your favourite family members. The IXUS 125 HS uses normal sized SD cards.

The Canon IXUS 125 HS is impressively thin and we plan to get a much closer look at these cameras over the next couple of days at CES 2012. It will be interesting to see how these ultra compact cameras perform and whether making them ultra compact has had any negative impact on image quality.
