A simple phone app developed by Microsoft researchers can turn photos of any object into a 3D model that can be viewed from any angle.
According to the Technology Review
, to see your 3D model come to life all you'd have to do is take several photos of an object with your camera phone then the photos are processed on the internet before the app downloads a model of it that can be panned around on screen. If you want to use a digital camera rather than a camera phone the photos have to be uploaded to a computer where they can be processed first.
How many shots need to be taken? Well if you're taking a photo of something about the size of a car you'll need around 40 pictures, anything smaller and you'll only need 25, sometimes less.
The team have also created a web browser plug-in where the 3D models can be shared online.
