Dantz Development Corporation today announced a major upgrade to the entire Retrospect Backup software product line for Microsoft Windows.  Retrospect Express, Desktop, Workgroup and Server Backup have been upgraded to version 5.5. The upgrade increases performance and adds requested features, including an automated disaster recovery wizard.

"Our most popular customer request has been for a bootable disaster recovery feature," stated Lawrence Zulch, Dantz CEO. "We believe that Retrospect version 5.5 offers the most reliable and precise emergency restore capability available, and our customers will be able to benefit from that reliability with their existing backups."

Retrospect Backup editions are now able to boot and completely restore a computer running Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 after complete hard drive failure. Retrospect s new disaster recovery feature is simple to use and does not require current Retrospect owners to create fresh backups. It will work with their existing backup sets.

Retrospect Workgroup and Server Backup can also completely restore a Windows NT or 2000 Server from bare metal.

It creates a bootable CD image that is saved to the hard disk.  The user can either burn a disc or store the image file on another computer for later use.
When disaster strikes, the user simply boots from this CD.  Retrospect uses the CD to load Windows and restore the computer to its exact, pre-disaster state.

"Other products require the user to continuously maintain disaster recovery CDs or boot floppies,' remarked Richard Zulch, Dantz CTO.  "Only Retrospect allows you to create one CD and then use your most recent backup set to perfectly restore your computer in a single operation - even after multiple incremental backups."

The only time the user needs to create a new CD image is when significant hardware modifications are made to the computer.

Retrospect Backup 5.5 also includes additional restore functionality. Files may now be selected from any listing of backed-up data, such as a session browser or backup set contents report. Any number of files from any number of backup sets may be selected and Retrospect will automate and optimise the restore process.
Retrospect's restores may also be performed on an active system, allowing a disk, folder, or the Registry to be rolled-back to a previously backed-up state.  As long as the disk being restored is visible to the Retrospect application, it is not necessary to use the disaster recovery feature or first install a temporary operating system; simply run the restore and reboot the computer.

Retrospect 5.5 also features performance increases in several areas, including source volume scanning, large network file transfers, backup of NTFS security permissions and Snapshot creation.  Retrospect 5.5 offers faster catalogue rebuilds from tape backup sets, reducing recovery time following a complete failure of the backup computer.

Retrospect Workgroup and Server Backup include a new version of Dantz's Retrospect Exchange Agent for complete backups of live Exchange 5.5 and 2000 servers.  This provides users with an affordable, reliable backup system for their Exchange Server without requiring the purchase of additional software.
