With more than 120 entries, a very high standard and four judges pressured to make a hard decision, the winners of East Renfrewshire 12 hour Photomarathon 2013 were announced on Sunday at Eastwood Park Theatre.
Peter Smith from Milngavie proved his camera skills are top notch after coming first, finishing ahead of runner up Paula Donaghy from Paisley and third placed Derek Young from Barrhead.
Peter said, “I managed to take most of my pictures in the house as it was dreadful weather outside. It was such a challenging competition and 12 hours is such a short space of time to take all the pictures but it was enjoyable.”
Herald photographers Martin Shields, Elaine Livingstone and Colin Mearns and Herald picture editor Brodie Duncan spent numerous gruelling hours debating and discussing their thoughts on each entry before agreeing the top three for the competition.
Martin Shields explained, “It has been a tough competition to judge this year and the entries have been of a very high standard. It was very close between the top two entries and it took us quite a long time to make the final decision. Overall, it has been great to see all the different ideas that people have had and it shows how much pleasure people get from photography.”
This year’s Photomarathon was split into two separate event days and four different categories to make the competition a level playing field for all. The categories included junior for 8-11yrs, senior for 12-16yrs, family for parents and children below 11yrs and also the 12 hour Photomarathon for budding photography enthusiasts.
Runner up Paula Donaghy also entered the family category and daughter Amy was in the junior category in which they both came first.
Ecstatic mother of two Paula said, “Not only was it a challenging competition to enter, it was a great activity for the whole family. I was very surprised at some of the ideas my children came up with and it was good to see the topics from their perspective.”
The top three winners have been invited to a photography master class with Elaine Livingstone and overall winner Peter has won the opportunity to shadow Herald photographer Martin Shields for the day.
Councillor Tony Buchanan explains, “Photomarathon is a highly creative event. The 12 hour event day is of the serious photographer of all ages, whilst the 6 hour event day is much more family friendly event. The results are of an incredibly high standard.”
The exhibition in Eastwood Park Theatre gallery will run until Friday 22 November 2013 where you can view the entries from all categories of the 2013 East Ren Photomarathon.
