You could buy a proper generic ring flash for that amount and if you really wanted to go down this route there are lots of similar items available for a fraction of the cost. 180 for something made out of plastic that has no electronic components contained within it whatsover is a complete con! When are these manufacturers/distributors going to learn to stop taking us for mugs!!!

They are not going to learn anything as long as they can con the mugs out there who are prepared to buy this stuff.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for your comments. I'm the inventor of the orbis, ioShutter and frio. Some of what you've said is a little wide of the mark so I hope you don't mind if I chip in;

- While you can buy ring flashes for less than the price of an orbis, they're LED lights designed for macro use... with the orbis you can shoot from macro out to full-length portraits. Something you can't do with cheaper ring lights. There are some knockoffs kicking around of a different design that aren't as versatile. I designed the orbis to work really well as a ring flash and a small softbox or beauty dish too.

I notice you shoot a lot of great macro Ade... our macro series might interest you:

(we're in the process of updating the image links as we just upgraded our site)

- You're right, the orbis doesn't have any electronic components. It does feature many unique, patented technologies that we spent two years developing, to make the orbis work so well. We made more than 40 prototypes before launching the orbis and rigorously tested every component. You can find out more about this process on our blog;

Needless to say, the frio and ioShutterSLR followed similar paths of intense development and research that each took more than a year. When they launched, each was unique and a world-first including patented and patent pending tech that make them work so well. The lookalikes, copies and cheaper versions of the frio and ioShutter on the market have been proven time again to be considerably less reliable and less well-made.

Investing in this kind of gear isn't a mug's game... Tens of thousands of photographers around the world, who I'm proud to say shoot with the gear I've invented, agree.
