Entries are now open for the 2006 Travel Photographer of the Year competition (TPOTY). This international challenge for amateur and professional photographers is now in its fourth year, and once again features superb prizes along with a new selection of categories and a special competition for young photographers.

Audley Travel, Genesis Imaging and Lee Filters have joined the sponsor line-up of Adobe, Fujifilm, G.A.P Adventures, Guerba, Hasselblad, Hewlett Packard, Independent Traveller, Iridius, Islands of the Bahamas, Land Rover, Mamiya, Plastic Sandwich and Wacom, further strengthening TPOTYs unique combination of travel and photographic prizes.

Categories and prizes
TPOTY 2006 features four portfolio categories, designed to stretch the entrants creativity, plus a single image category, with generous prizes for each category winner, and runner-up, Highly Commended and Commended entries. The four portfolio categories are Streetlife, Iconic, North of 30 Degrees and Wild, while the Single Image competition theme for 2006 is Festival.

The photographer who scores the highest number of points across two different portfolio categories will be awarded the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2006 and a fantastic prize:
  • a 14-day adventure to Mozambique and South Africa with G.A.P Adventures, combining big game watching with experiencing glorious Indian Ocean beaches.
  • A Hewlett Packard Designjet 90gp printer, complete with network kit, roll feed kit, stand and bin, Gretag Macbeth technology plus a generous supply of A1, A2 and A3 paper and fade-resistant HP dye-based inks
  • Adobe CS2 Premium Collection software
  • A Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book, made in their own choice of size and format and personalised with their name

Portfolio categories
Streetlife anywhere where people live, whether thats a big city or a small village. Entrants must submit four images that show a place and its people. Prize: a journey to Thailand for two people with Guerba; a superb Hasselblad H2 kit; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

Iconic this category is for the icons of travel; dream destinations, timeless images. These can be places, landscapes, experiences, but its more than picture postcard photography; the judges want to see creativity, not clich. Prize: a private two-week tour of Sri Lanka, with car and chauffeur guide, with Audley Travel; the latest Fujifilm Pro digital SLR camera and lens, plus 2 x 4GB memory cards; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

North of 30 Degrees after three years of too many Buddhist monks, Maasai warriors and South American market traders this category is to give the judges a break! Its effectively an open travel theme, but only images taken in places north of 30 degrees latitude are eligible for this portfolio. Prize: a tour of the fascinating Himachal Pradesh region of India with The Independent Traveller; Mamiya 7II rangefinder camera plus choice of two lenses; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

Wild wildlife, landscape, adventure, extreme sports all shot within a travel context. Now theres a challenge. Prize: an adventurous journey to Brazil, courtesy of Land Rover; a custom-built website from Iridius; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

Entrants who finish second in the four portfolio categories each win an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer, designed specifically for professional photographers, plus a superb Intuos3 A5 Wide graphics tablet, ideal for use with widescreen displays, HDTV monitors or multi-monitor set-ups.

Highly Commended entrants receive a Lee Filters Starter Kit plus Fujifilm Multijet Inkjet paper, while Commended entrants win a hardback copy of Travel Photographer of the Year - Journey Two - plus Fujifilm Multijet Inkjet Paper.

Single image category
Photographers are challenged to capture the colour, movement, culture, eccentricity, history, sounds and smell of a Festival to win this category. In just one, incredibly strong, image. Prize: 7 day trip to the Islands of the Bahamas; Plastic Sandwich Leather Portfolio book; Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

The runner-up in this category wins an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer and copies of the TPOTY books Journey One and Journey Two in hardback. The Highly Commended entrant wins a Lee Filters Starter Kit plus Fujifilm Multijet Inkjet paper, while the Commended entrant wins a hardback copy of Travel Photographer of the Year - Journey Two - plus Fujifilm Multijet Inkjet Paper.

Young travel photographer of the year 2006

Open to photographers aged 16 and under, Young TPOTY invites youngsters to submit four images on the theme Wish You Were Here. The entrant whose work most impresses the panel of judges will win a bundle of prizes to help them take their photography to the next level:
  • An HP Photosmart 8450 printer and HPScanjet 4890 photo scanner
  • Wacom Graphire 4 Classic pen tablet
  • Adobe Creative Suite Premium software
  • A beautiful leather portfolio book from Plastic Sandwich

Entries are now open, and close on September 9, 2006. Entry costs from 5 for one portfolio category or the Single Image category. Entry is free for photographers aged 16 and under.
