Fujifilm Student Awards December Winner - A Falmouth University student has been named the December winner of the Fujifilm Student Awards.
Robert's image, which shows a long exposure over Falmouth Docks at night, impressed judges with its vivid colours and overall feel. Going into further detail on the inspiration behind his image, Robert said: "I was interested in taking long exposure images using medium format film, which seemed to bring out usually unseen colour in even the most lifeless of locations. The image was shot using Fuji Reala 120 as I found it generates a great range of colours when shooting long exposures".
Organisers have added to the prizes given away this year by introducing a monthly award to the image deemed 'Curators Choice' by the judges. Each monthly prize winner will feature in a winner's London exhibition to be held in summer 2013. They will also be presented with a 12" x 16" professionally produced print of their winning image by Metroprint as well as receiving 10 rolls of Fujifilm film.
Falmouth student Adam McGhee had impressed judges back in November with his image of a woman working on an allotment overlooking The Clyde River in Glasgow and was crowned the first monthly prize winner of the competition.
Creative Director for Metroprint Steve Macleod made this comment: "For many, the setting up and taking of long exposure night shots can be a complex process of trial and error; once the exposure is mastered, some then forget all about composition, happy with the fact that they have just managed to get something down on film! However this entry has managed very capably to achieve both, so a worthy effort and deserved winner."
This year's Award is run in conjunction with ChooseFilm.com, the online community dedicated to film photography and Metroprint, the online arm of Metro Imaging, the respected London pro lab.
The awards are now open to all students in the UK, not just those undertaking courses involving photography. This decision was taken following several requests from students who are keen photographers but not actually studying photography.
The theme for this year's Award is 'The Colour Of....' with students being briefed to capture an image that illustrates how colour lights up their world. All images must be taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk - entry is free and students can enter as many photographs as they wish.
In addition to being named Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2013, the overall winning image will feature in an exhibition to be held in London next summer, as well receiving a professionally produced folio of prints and a one-to-one printing/consultancy session with one of Metroprint's top printers and also £200 worth of film from Fujifilm. The college or university that submits the most entries will win £200 worth of Fujifilm Professional film.
2013 marks the 28th anniversary of the competition, making it the longest running and most prestigious student photography awards in the UK. The closing date for the competition is the 29th April 2013.
