When you open the app you can drag and drop an image in, press the load / import button or open the last used image. You'll find the whole range of effects listed along the bottom of the screen, with thumbnails giving you a preview. Just above the thumbnail previews, you'll see a menu bar. This gives access to the frames as well. The frames and effects can be sorted into categories.

Each one has a star, press this and it turns gold, indicating it has been added to your favourites, so it's easier to find next time. You can save combinations of presets to use on future images, these will be saved into the presets tab. If you want a lucky dip, you can press the dice for a random effect.

Below are examples of each of the presets and frames available, you can view the original file here.

In the top right-hand corner next to FX effects is crop / rotate, which does as it says. You can perform a free crop or use one of the many preset proportions, including 1:1, 3:2, 4:3 and 16:9.

You can also edit your picture with a range of sliders which include temperature, saturation, hue, exposure, brightness, contrast, shadows, highlights, sharpen, red, blue and green.

In the next image, we have increased the shadows and highlights to create a HDR style look. The image has also been sharpened, with the G&A frame 4 added.

The next image we have used a mask to turn the image black and white, except for the green grass, to create a colour splash effect.

FX Photo Studio Pro will work with RAW files as well, this image has been converted from a Nikon D800E. Click here to download the original RAW file. Speed is good, again, we've increased the detail in shadows and highlights and sharpened a touch.

When using the app, there are options to undo and redo along the top of the screen. You can also zoom in and out, fit to screen and view at actual size, as well as compare the original to the edited version. When you've finished you can save your image, export to another app such as iPhoto or share to Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr and Twitter. When sending to social network sites, there is an option to change the resolution to one more suited for the web.

FX Photo Studio Pro For Mac Verdict

FX Photo Studio Pro for Mac is an ideal photo editing app for those who aren't keen on using complicated and expensive software such as Photoshop. There are plenty of tools to improve your pictures, with the ability to add effects and borders, as well as adjust the exposure, brightness, saturation, contrast, temperature, hues, sharpen image, reduce noise, adjust levels, shadows, highlights and more. It's all easy to do, the simplicity does mean that there's no options to edit using layers and you can only edit one picture at a time, but this is unlikely to be a problem for most users. It's currently on offer at £13.99, so we recommend you buy it straight away.
