The Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) have announced the winners of this year's competition, which has a grand prize of $120,000 and an overall prize pool of $389,000 up for grabs.

The competition, which boasts having the largest prize money of any photography competition anywhere in the world, featured four categories: 'Beauty of Light', 'The United Arab Emirates', 'Black and White' and 'The General Category'.

His Excellency Ali bin Thalith (Secretary General, HIPA) said: "121 different countries have presented us with 19,000 photographers who in turn contributed 26,000 photographs.

The judges in this season's award were well aware of the difficulty they would face in finding the best photograph in the 'Beauty of Light' category, because of the high standard of photographs submitted this season.

We are satisfied with what has been achieved during this season's award and we hope to emulate this success next season."

Osama Al Zubaidi was crowned the 'Beauty of Light' Grand Prize winner with the following shot:

Well done to all the winners, particularly Osama with your stunning image! A worthy winner.

This is the second year of HIPA which is hailed as the richest photo competition on the planet, with free entry and a panel of distinguished judges. The awards culminated in a glittering prize giving ceremony in Dubai on 18th March plus the publication of a beautiful 240 page book (PDF downloadable). With record entries this year, it is a great achievement to reach the short-list, but to win a prize is an even bigger honor.

However, it is sad to see that the Black and White category winner has picked up $16,000 with an image that has won awards before - the HIPA rules strictly forbid this. Very unfair to the many photographers who submitted original work and followed the rules. Ironically the same thing happened last year and two winners were disqualified.

This seems to be the trend in high end competitions of late, starting with the Wildlife POTY wolf fiasco then last year's Take-a-View Landscape POTY and more recently the National Geographic awards. I think that there needs to be a bit more vetting done at the short-list stage to before any final awards or publication of books etc. IMHO.Sad
