It gives users a quick and easy way to apply digital darkroom effects to your images which includes, overlays, borders and several base effects. To use it you simply choose where you want to take your image from then it's opened up in the editing window where you can apply several different effects to your photograph. It's a very easy, and addictive, way to give your digital shots that old-school, vintage feel. Pixlr claim there are over 25,000 looks waiting to be created.

Pixlr Photo Editor

The same company who help you create vintage images also have an ordinary photo editor and for something that's free, it really has a lot of tools that someone who knows their way around Photoshop would be very used to seeing. It even features layer masks and several filters including Gaussian Blur, unsharp Mask etc. You can create a new image from scratch or open images you have already produced to tweak. You save as you do in all editing software by going to File>Save where you can then choose various places to save your image to which includes on your hard drive and on sites such as Flickr. It's easy to use, quick to load and something well worth of making a note for next time you're using a computer away form home that doesn't have any photo editing software on it apart from Paint!

Photoshop Express

adobe photoshop
Photoshop Express is Adobe's answer to free online editing software. It is available on all major platforms, including androids for smart phones and apps for iPods and iPads. You need to create an account at photoshop.com, which then enables you to access a whole host of free features. The sits also boasts free online galleries and links to all the popular sharing sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Photoshop Express Editor enables you to perform all the usual tasks, such as adjusting exposure, cropping and adjust colour, along with a load more features. It boasts some new tools too such as the ability to pixellate and crystallise images giving effects such as stained glass. Cleanly set out and easy to use, this software is pretty good for a free online editor.

FotoFlexer

fotoflexer
This universal online photo editor sells itself as being "The world's most advanced online image editor", which is a pretty big claim. It enables users to dabble in everything from the usual blemish fixing and effects such as watercolour and sepia to more fun things such as adding shapes to your photos, doodling on them and using various fonts in several colours to brighten your photo. If anything, FotoFlexer is a little bit too busy and if you're just looking to tweak your photos a little bit, there are more simple and effective programmes out there. If you are looking for that silly touch with your photos, though, FotoFlexer is great. You can even distort photos, warping them to create various hilarious effects.

Picnik

piknik
Picnik looks very green and fresh, and requires no registration, so it's very easy to simply click on the website and get editing your photos. It works on all the major computer platforms, Windows, Mac and Linux, and requires no download. You simply work on your photos in your browser window. You can also upgrade to a premium service, for $24.95 a year, but everything you need for basic editing and more is available to you on the fee version. It also enables you to “grab” your photos from where you store them online, places such as Flickr, Facebook and Picasa web albums, which is a very useful feature.

Lunapic

lunapic
Lunapic is a simple site, with the upload box for your image or video right there on the home screen, taking you right to the action. The tools are all ready and waiting for you down the left hand side of the screen. This makes Lunapic fast and easy to access. It enables you to paste images, create slide shows, use reflective imagery and retro colour your photos. It also has a feature enabling you to vote on pictures, and has over 200 effects that you can use on your photos. It also enables you to open photos from a web URL which is handy.

Phixr

phixr
Phixr has a very simple homepage and to get any real information from it, you need to log in. The site doesn't really sell itself in that it hasn't got any feature lists on the homepage. To get any information out of it, you have to agree to terms and conditions and sign up. Having said that, once you're in to the site, the features aren't bad at all and it has all the usual features you expect to see in a photo editor, including a whole variety of lighting and colour effects.

Free online photo editor

free online photo editor
Yes, it's a free online photo editor, as the title tells us. Not very imaginative, but it does get the necessary message across. Again, it's a very clean and well set out site with the upload photo feature right there at the top of the homepage, making the site very user friendly. All the photo options are set out as a horizontal tab menus, which is easy to navigate and they make it very easy to find what you need.

Pho.to online editor

pho.to
The Pho.to online editor site looks very professional and modern, again with easy to navigate menus. It enables you to upload photos from your internal computer disk or URL, and again, the features are clearly set out to the left of the image. It is very modern and easy to use even for the most inexperienced photographer. It features a one click all in one photo enhancement feature, which corrects all the little niggles in your photo in one feral swoop. It is ideal if you are simply looking to touch up your photos rather than add special effects to them.

PiZap

piZap
piZap is a website geared up for teens and kids, looking to put frames and quirky effects to their photos. It features the ability to quickly and effectively piZap your Facebook photos, something that appeals greatly to kids and teenagers. It has separate tabs to touch up and resize your photos, which could be seen as annoying if you want to both resize and touch your photos up at the same time. It lets you add several different coloured fonts, warp your photos, and there are also some great quirky backgrounds and frames. This is definitely one for the kids.
