HIPA Life In Colour

HIPA has announced the next season for the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Awards (HIPA), which are now entering the fourth year. The overall theme for the 2014 to 2015 season is entitled Life In Colour. The 2013-2014 winners were announced yesterday at the HIPA Grand Award Ceremony.

The four categories for the 2014-2015 season are:
  • Life in Colour
  • General
  • Faces (Black and White only)
  • Night Photography
HIPA has increased the number of winners, to a total of 23 international winners, and each category will have 5 winners. There will be an overall winner, plus two special awards, one is the Photography Appreciation Award, and the other is the Photography Research/Report Award. The total prize value of the entire competition has been increased to $400,000 US dollars.

In previous years there have been separate prizes for United Arab Emirates (UAE) entries, which were designed to encourage photography in the UAE, however HIPA say that they feel the level of UAE photography matches international quality.

Despite the overall theme being "Life In Colour", HIPA will still be accepting black and white entries. HIPA also said that they are looking at continuing the awards into the future, as well as looking into setting up a HIPA Academy. HIPA will be exhibiting at Photokina, in Cologne, Germany later in the year.

Submissions open: 21st March 2014. Submissions close: 31st December 2014 (Midnight).

From HIPA: FOURTH SEASON 2014 - 2015 - LIFE IN COLOUR

Welcome to the fourth season of the highly acclaimed HIPA photography awards. You’re invited to share your imaginative mind, your passion for your craft and push yourself to produce your best work yet. It’s your opportunity to explore the beauty of the world that surrounds you, to distil a story, to dive into a rich pool of colour and depict an emotive moment in time.

This year’s theme ‘Life in Colour’ is a wonderfully open brief that allows your creative mind to explore an array of exciting avenues –where will this journey take you? We encourage you to unleash your lenses. To express yourself freely, and let your imagination lead you to gain the recognition you deserve.

Within this season’s Life in Colour theme there are four opportunities to showcase your eye for detail: these are:

‘Life in Colour’, ‘General/Entrants’ Choice’, ‘Faces’, and ‘Night Photography’ categories.

Find out more about these and get your creative juices flowing by reading the descriptive yet open-to-interpretation introductions that we’ve provided. Think of them as the catalyst for your ideas and your springboard to creative excellence.

Here’s to capturing the people, the places, and the colours of life that make our world such an exciting place to live.

Fourth Season 2014 - 2015 - Life In Colour Categories:

LIFE IN COLOUR

The beauty of life is its colour. From fresh cooling blues, calming terracotta hues, deep rich reds to vibrant sunshiny yellows, colour has the ability to alter our psyche. They can bring a warming glow into a dull day and turn the corners of our mouths upwards.

Colour speaks of the people, places, animals, plants and consumables that play a starring role in our everyday lives. Colour can add a splash of drama. It can be muted and emulate the calmness within. It has the ability to say so much more than just its one or two worded name.

Bright white can speak of freshly painted walls, teeth within a tanned face, or clean laundered bed sheets blowing in the breeze – each one depicts a very different story. But what does ‘Life in Colour’ say to you? That’s up for your creative mind to decide.

GENERAL

If you had to choose just one piece of work to reflect your passion for capturing life through a lens, which photograph would you submit?

This category gives you the opportunity to enter a truly outstanding piece of photography that best exemplifies the excellence of the HIPA awards.

It’s completely open, embraces all subject matters, removes boundaries and offers participants the chance to choose work that reflects their style as long as they adhere to the criteria and regulations of the Award.

FACES (Black and White only)

People are a fascinating subject matter. Laughter lines of experience, smiling shining eyes that express a moment of gratitude, a mouth left wide open in awe – the human face can speak to the soul, address your mind and captivate your heart.

We invite you to explore emotions, capture someone’s compelling story, and evoke the attitude, personality and essence of people who have inspired you to pick up your camera and record our great rich and varied lives.

In this category we encourage you to use black and white photography to maintain the authenticity of the beauty of life, and portray the finer details that make each one of us so special and unique. The use of black and white demands accomplished compositions and expert use of light: this is a true test of your ability.

Night Photography

Night time can bring still, starry calmness, the hustle and bustle of people leaving work and heading home, a blank canvas for celebratory fireworks, roaring campfires and the shining lights of traffic. It offers mysterious shadows to hide in.

Speaks of secrets waiting to be discovered once light arrives. The dark veil of night provides a romantic light to capture a glimmer of beauty. There’s something truly magical about it. This category gives you the chance to play with your creativeness, reveal the beguiling charm of the night and offers you the perfect opportunity to shine.
