HP deliver breakthrough 8-ink colour and black & white printing system - No hassle black & white and enhanced colour photo prints

HP unveil a simple solution that allows anyone to print true black & white and colour photos of, HP say, exceptional quality. Central to HP's proprietary eight ink printing system, the new No. 59 grey photo cartridge captures subtle shades of grey for moody black and white photos and adds vibrancy, contrast, and detail to colour pics.

The new printing system from HP raises the stakes for photo printing. It comprises the premier HP Photosmart 7960 printer, the No' 57, No' 58 and the No. 59 grey photo cartridge as well as thicker A4 and 10 x 15cm Premium Plus Satin Matt and Glossy Papers. For the first time, aficionados of digital photography and novices alike, have a solution that eliminates the need for complicated printer profiling.

"Although photo printing has come on in leaps and bounds, true black & white photo printing just hasn't been an option for digital enthusiasts", says Kerry Hogarth, Supplies Category manager. "We invest millions of pounds in our printing systems each year so our customers can benefit from our innovations. It's great when you deliver break-through technologies like eight-ink printing."

The HP No. 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge
The HP No. 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge contains three different new inks: light grey, medium grey, and a new photo black. These dye-based HP inks are specially formulated to produce true-to-life black-and-white photos. Unlike printing systems that use black dots on white print media to create grey tones, these inks are combined with each other to allow true greyscale printing with smooth transitions. When medium grey dots are placed, they are surrounded by a field of light grey dots. The same is true for photo black dots - they are located in an area of medium grey dots. Therefore, true greyscales are achieved with considerably reduced grain.

More colours for photo prints
Colour photo prints also benefit from the new grey print cartridge. Its inks significantly expand the colour gamut available in combination with the HP No. 57 and HP No. 58 print cartridges, capturing more than 79.2 million colours. It adds vibrancy, contrast, and detail in shadow areas, reduces grain in flesh tones and adds light to mid tones, for example, in clouds and when rendering metallics.

The HP No. 59 grey photo print cartridge can also be used in the new colour inkjet printers HP Photosmart 245, 7660, and 7760.

The look and feel of traditional photos with enhanced photo paper
The specially formulated inks in the HP No. 59 print cartridge are designed to precisely match with the sophisticated coating technology on the enhanced HP Premium Plus Photo Paper. HP's best photo paper now offers an increased thickness and weight of 280 g/m2, and a higher gloss-level. The photo paper has the look and feel of traditionally processed photos. High-resolution digital images are rendered with the same brilliant colours or subtle gradations of grey one expects from analog photos. When printed on this paper with the HP No. 57/58/59 inkjet print cartridges photo prints resist fading for generations.

In each format (A4-size and 10 x 15 cm), HP Premium Plus Photo Paper now comes with either a glossy or satin-matt finish. The glossy 10 x 15 cm version is available with or without tear-off tab; the latter option being optimised for printers, such as the new HP Photosmart 245, 7660, 7760, and 7960 which are capable of borderless printing on all four edges.

The special back coating of HP Premium Plus Photo Paper helps prevent photos from sticking together when stacked in the out-tray, allowing for unattended printing. Furthermore, HP's unique paper coating is more resistant to scratching and smudging.

Optimum image quality with HP's systems approach
The HP No. 59 grey photo print cartridge and the enhanced HP Premium Plus Photo Paper have been especially designed for HP's latest generation of inkjet printers. In HP's systems approach, the three elements of HP inkjet printing systems - HP inkjet print cartridges, print media, and printers - are designed together and thoroughly tested to deliver optimum reliability, performance, and print quality.

Prices and availability
The HP No. 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge is available as of September 2003 for £28.99, whilst the enhanced HP Premium Plus Photo Paper with two different finishes and in various formats and pack sizes can be purchased for as little as £8.99.
