Unique to hp, smart chip technology enables intuitive interaction between the
hp cartridge and hp printer through the use of microchips and other web-enabled
technologies to make office life easier. It continuously monitors the level of
toner, and alerts the user when it is running low. The alert, which can be
received remotely, gives the option to order a replacement cartridge over the
Internet at a single command.
The alert from the smartchip cartridge can be sent not only to a PC but also
to a mobile device (phone or pager). The smart cartridge itself has an embedded
web server (EWS), which means that, on command, it can connect to the Internet
via the printer's own URL. Part numbers and other ordering information are
automatically registered to ensure that only the correct cartridges are ordered.
The user can choose from which reseller to buy, and the order is processed and
confirmed. The whole transaction takes only a few minutes.
"Our research shows us that customers want simpler purchasing processes, the
right product every time and minimised printer downtime. The smartchip Internet
enabled re-order service has been developed over several years as a direct
response to this need," says Rhiannon Williams, UK supplies product manager. "In
addition, the IESO service allows us to give our channel partners the ability to
reach customers who want to buy online."
To qualify to be part of the hp IESO service, resellers have had to install
the appropriate infrastructure and pass stringent technical and fulfillment
criteria. The resellers currently involved in the UK are MicroWarehouse and
Action and many more are planning to follow. Sarah Rickard, Supplies Business
Manager at Microwarehouse notes:, "We are delighted to be amongst the first to
offer HP's Internet Enabled Supplies Ordering service. This service is great
news for our customers, who will always get the right supplies exactly when they
need them; and equally for us, as a perfect example of how our e-commerce
systems can really add value."
Aside from the internet enabled ordering service, the hp smartchip brings a
range of benefits to the laser printer user. Features include: *supplies status
information: toner levels are continuously monitored and the usage data is
tracked to allow informed purchase decisions. Also, because it is constantly
monitoring toner levels the smart cartridge will alert the user if the toner
levels are too low to finish a print job. *design changes: an improved stirring
system means there is no longer any need to manually shake the toner cartridge
at the end of its life.
* installation and usability improvement: hp introduces automatic tab seal
removal on selected printers. The cartridges will also display a message once
they are correctly installed, assuring the user of the highest quality printing.
Currently the smartchip cartridge internet re-ordering service is available for
the HP LJ4100, 4550, 8150 and LJ9000 printers.
