Canon logoSpeculation surrounding the specifications of Canon's follow up to the 5D and its release date have once again got tongues wagging in internet forums.

The speculating began after a member of the DP Review forums posted what they believed to be the specifications for Canon's 5D MkII camera. Their post said the Canon 5D MkII will have:

  • 16.7 MP FF sensor
  • Single Digic MkIII Processor
  • ISO100-3200 (Low: 50 + High 6400)
  • 6-8 fps - depending on grip
  • 3in High Resolution OLED LCD
  • will accept EF Lenses, not EF-S
  • 11 point AF
  • 35 Zone Metering
  • Viewfinder: 96 percent coverage .72 magnification
  • Pop up flash
  • New Lithium Ion Battery
  • Weather Sealing slightly better than 40D

The same forum member also said: "A guy who works at our local camera store is in Kona and he made the same statement about it not being released until right before Photokina. He hasn't verified this, but a person on another forum mentioned their salesperson saying that the 5D replacement won't be out until right before Photokina." No prices were mentioned but the forum member did also say that a 50D and a few compact cameras will also be out towards the end of August.

That is a bit too quick for 50D, isn't it?
40D hasn't been long.

If they price it as stupidly as the plastic fantastic 1000d then you will need to mortgage the house to pay for it and lets hope they can eventually move towards a camera where the auto white balance actually works under artificial light !

This is all old news i'm afraid. I was told back in Feb about this by someone who had just visited the Canon factory.

No mention of the LF model then!!

If only! We've just got together a really strong team and we're capable of bringing you actual photographic news instead of just press releases.

This have been ongoing speculation for ages. The spec is pretty much what has been banded about for a while now - although the '11 point' AF is actually less than the current 5D.

Still sounds like you are sitting on news you cannot break yet Wink Unless the news section is expanding into idle gossip as well?

"News is any new information or information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience.", wikipedia.

So if recent rumour mongering on other sites is considered to be new information (nope) or current events (not really), I suppose you could class reporting on this news.

Personally I hope that reporting this as "news" doesn't result in ephotozine forums full of the rubbish you find on other sites such as DPR. If a collection of rumours is what people are after then sites with dedicated pages to that purpose are better suited i.e. north light images rumour pages. If on the otherhand jumping on the rumour bandwagon is being used to increase site hits, then I fear the end of my haven for real product news, guidance and advice which is Ephotozine Sad

We just like to keep everyone on top of things. Some readers don't go anywhere except here and may be interested to know about the possibility of a new camera even if it's not confirmed. We're also trying to give a broad range of photographic news, so don't worry about a torrent of rumours being uploaded. Smile

But the thing is Matt, if a new camera is just about to be released you will KNOW about it. You will either have the invitation to the launch event, or maybe even have a model for reviewing.

I confidently predict that Canon and Nikon and Pentax and Sony and (yawn) everybody else will be releasing new cameras in the next day/week/month/year (please delete as appropriate)
