Ah, John Tisbury won LAST YEAR too. How did that happen? Does NUDE have such terrible circulation that he was the only one? Does NUDE play favorites? NUDE sure loves to use the same photographers issue after issue, but contests too? Sorry, I'm not buying this, something is wrong. WRONG!

Judging is done anomalously so no-one knows whose work it is. They were in fact very honest in giving me the award for a second year in a row. They have since added a rule that no-one can win the competition more than once. They have asked me to be a judge for the next competition.
This is simply NOT true John. I know for a fact because I worked for them last year, I wrote the promotional material for the contest, and I worked hard to get the release in ePhotoZine. (And I wrote a few issues, cover to cover) The people that pick the winners are Carrie and Gary Frischer (aka Carrie Leigh and her husband) ... Any way you shake this it smells. I'm pissed because I worked my ASS off to promote a contest that was ultimately RIGGED. And since you didn't have the courage to include in ANY thing you posted that you had won this last year shows us all that you are guilty of collusion in this botched publication. This magazine didn't publish for more than 6 months, it should have walked away and buried itself rather than do this kind of crap. Not only do they use the same photographers over and over again when there is a world of photographers to choose from (the reason I left their employee), now they are resorting to awarding the same winners in their contest. I bet they sleep fine too.

Your work is amazing, John, truly remarkable stuff, but this stinks and you know it. Unlike you, however, I have to live with the fact that I convinced a lot of people to fork over large entry fees when they had ZERO chance of winning. It sucks to be used...no?

As a employee of NUDE, which has mass worldwide circulation, and in fact has been a best seller in both Borders and Barnes and Nobles since day one, I can say that this competition is judged blind. None of the judges know whose art they are looking at. I know this as a fact as it is my job to download all images without names attached. It is also my job to locate the names after the selections are made. John Manzione is a bitter former writer who was terminated after working on one issue. He has since expressed his bitterness and anger everywhere he can.
John Tisbury won based on his art. John Manzione should take the time to look at the art and maybe this will help him understand that his statements towards both NUDE and John Tisbury are baseless.
In a staff meeting Emmy Winning Artist Joel Adams, who has been with NUDE from day one suggested to Carrie Leigh that the new rule of asking the Grand Prize Winner to become a judge will assure us that no one who has a prior Grand Prize win can enter a second time. No one here anticipated multiple wins but to block a Artist from their rightful place and the acknowledgement of their place would be extremely unfair.
One last thought: maybe John Manzione must believe that all repeat winners such as the Yankees, U.C,L.A, The Lakers, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Golden Globe Winners as well as Academy Award Winners should be banned form winning twice in a role due to the fact that talent should not be acknowledged.
In working for NUDE for the past three years I have learned that those that are truly talented and continue to create great art and tone their craft, just like a sports team, a actor and a singer who have risen above the crowd, they too deserve the spotlight. In three years NUDE has exhibited hundreds of photographers and artist and I believe that all, from the world famous, who sell art for over one million dollars a painting to the newly discovered photographer to the talented contest winners, are all greatfull for the opportunity to exhibit their work.
Once again great job to John Tisbury and all the other winners.

I want to explain that I am marketing director at the college subscription agency that works with NUDE. And my art was published in Nude 2 years ago. And no, I have never won the contest.

Congratulations to John--your photography is TRULY outstanding, and stands on its own merits. As an artist I really appreciate your compositions, your attention to lighting--everything you do makes for wonderful art.

I don't understand what the OP's issues are, although I sense some bitterness. Being somewhat familiar with how the NUDE contest works from past years, I know that it is a blind submission process, so that the art is judged solely on its merits and not by who took the photo. I think that it speaks more to quality of work that John won this contest 2 years straight. And he deserves it!
I have kept my silence for a year regarding Mr. Manzione’s rants all over the Internet about Carrie Leigh’s NUDE. I am a retired college professor, the author of two successful textbooks about media writing and marketing, with a Ph.D. in English from an Ivy League university. Numerous times I have been called in by publishers to clean up a mess in editorial content that someone has made of a publication. That was the circumstance under which I was hired as managing editor for NUDE.

As far as I know, Mr. Manzione did indeed write cover-to-cover for the Fall 2009 issue, and anyone is welcome to compare this issue, fraught with grammatical mistakes and weak writing content, to the issues that preceded and followed it. You will always find a few proofreading mistakes in a professional publication, but this was, in the vernacular, a mess.

We have all heard the horrible news stories of a disgruntled employee who is fired or whose contract is not renewed. In extreme cases, they arm themselves and return to the workplace to kill anyone in sight. Figuratively, this is what Mr. Manzione has spent the past year doing. I don’t think anyone on the NUDE staff has missed being insulted, misrepresented, and ranted about at any possible online venue, including his own blog that has been the heart of his senseless rants and has no Alexa ranking anyway.

When I saw the rant in the Comments here, I felt things have gone way, way too far. It is one thing to attack a publication and every one of its staff members. It is another to malign someone who simply entered and legitimately won a contest. To deprive John Tisbury of his laurels, for me, is simply the last straw. These constant rants and the gauntlet thrown down for us to defend ourselves have been ignored ad infinitum, but come on. Now Mr. Manzione is shooting the innocent bystanders.

When someone loses a position, that person needs to find another one and get on with life. As Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much methinks.” In this case, it is a man who is behaving like a wronged lover and needs to get over it. Certainly this man has something else to do.

John Tisbury is not fair game for these rants. Mr. Manzione owes him a sound apology and might best take a look in the mirror. This looks like the behavior of a mad man. I hope he can get his head together, let go of past disappointments, and craft a better future for himself.
Carla Johnson, aka Unbearable Lightness, I was just thinking the same thing, "The lady doth protest too much methinks" fits Carrie Leigh NUDE perfectly. Why, look at this, 3 so-called employees defending their bosses. Nice. And none of you know anything about it. Very slick...

Been on a rant for a year? Where? Show us? You state so many lies in your post its tough to know where to begin, so I won't (but boy am I glad I saved all the emails from Gary and Carrie so the public can see who was fired and who quit, and why... I'll save it for XtremeCamera..No use getting into a flame war on this site.

You're welcome to defend your 2-bit publication, the laughing stock of every serious photographer, I have since learned, and you can tell your bosses that since they saw fit to sic their dogs over here to defend their rigged contest they are more than welcome to defend against more than 50 emails that pretty much defend everything I will finally publish. A Rant for a year? Nah, but this now, no-holds-barred. Thanks for making this decision easy.

hmm.....I didn't realize that I worked for NUDE. Guess I'll need to talk to Gary & Carrie about a paycheck soon Smile

John, you may have issues with your former employers, but you are polluting the first issue with your rants. you believe that the contest was rigged; 3 people have said that it is not. It doesn't make much sense to charge people to enter a blind contest only to preset the winner. It loses all credibility.

Are you saying John Tisbury's work did not deserve to win?
