We asked John Gravett of Lakeland Photographic Holidays who is an award-winning landscape photographer what his favourite locations are and where he would like to travel to next.

The Lakes

Being based in the Lakes does lend itself more to a general landscape theme, as it's a fairly picturesque area. There are too many to list, but here are some that I'm pretty fond of.

  • Derwentwater
  • Blea Tarn
  • Buttermere
  • Crummock Water
  • Rydal Water
  • Watendlath tarn
Worldwide, I'm very much of the view that wherever you go, you can find interesting things to photograph. I was in the centre of Cardiff the other week, and never would have put that on my list of places to photograph, but was really pleased with what I came away with. Places I've visited and loved photographing include:

The UK

  • The Peaks
  • Yorkshire Dales
  • The Lakes
  • Scotland - the Trossachsa and the highlands,
  • All cities, woodlands, the list is endless, the UK is so wonderfully varied, there is a wealth of subjects.

Worldwide

  • Tuscany – or any part of Italy.
  • France – from Provence, to Brittany, to Paris, especially some of the insane architecture in the city.
  • Yosemite national park – it kept Ansel Adams going for years, no photographer can ever run out of subjects there.
  • Antigua – although the Caribbean makes me so laid back I could almost forget my camera (joke).
  • Cities – St Francisco, Paris, Hamburg, anywhere where there are diverse cultures, people and colour.
  • China – it's many years since I've been there, but it was a real experience, and quite a culture shock.
If there was anywhere in the world I could photograph, it would be Iceland. I'm running an annual workshop in Iceland from 2012 – it's somewhere I find fascinating. Other places I would love to visit include the Rockies and the Grand Canyon, Thailand, and I'd really love to visit the Arctic or Antarctic, cities including Prague and St Petersburgh.
