Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter

The Longridge Trio Midi system is a well thought out
piece of kit and costs £250 from Warehouse Express

During the coming days in June we have plenty of photo ideas for you to shoot. With luck, a following wind and your brilliant camera skills, you might end up with some images that you are really proud of and want to print out and mount up.

In terms of presentation, I think a lovely print finished in a bevelled edge window mount cut from white board is very hard to beat. It is classic yet classy, understated yet professional and lets the picture take pride of place.

In fairness, if you want to mount the odd print you might as well go to the local art shop and have one cut for you. But if you are more productive and market your pictures, or enter images into club competitions, or just like showing off your work at home, buying your own window mount cutter is a worthwhile investment.

I have been trying the Longridge Trio Midi window mount cutter for the past few weeks and so far, so good.

Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter: Features
Longridge offers two systems, the Duo and the Trio. The Trio is recommended for photographers who produce mostly mounts of the same size and the parallelogram accessory makes life easier. If you cut mounts of various sizes with varying aperture sizes, the Duo is the better (and cheaper) option.

Three cutting sizes are available in the Trio system. The Midi cuts mounts up to A2 and windows up to 520mm and that is good enough for most enthusiast photographers and costs £250 from Warehouse Express.

All you need, apart from mountboard comes in the box. There are full instructions, an instructional DVD, marking out tools, guides and stops to hold the board in position and a parallelogram.

The parallelogram is easy to use and allow precise selection of border width.

Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter: Handling
Getting ready to cut mounts is simple enough and the mount cutter is supplied ready for use. There are mount cutters where some self-assembly has to be done first but not here.

You do need to prepare a clean working area. A firm stable working surface is essential – a wobbly working surface with any give can result in poor cuts. It is also worth saying that you always work with the back of the mountboard.

One accessory not supplied but is definitely worth considering is a pair of lint-free white gloves. A search on the web revealed that you can buy a 12 pair pack for a little over £30 which works out at £2.14 a pair. For handling your prints and mountboard it is a small price to pay – especially at this time of year when it can get very humid and sweaty. Sweaty fingerprints will mark the card permanently so will cost you money.

Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter: Performance
The instructions are concise and clear. They could be even better with a sheet that annotates the key components clearly. It might be obvious once you have used the Trio a few times, but to start with the first page of instructions using terms like Cutter Stops, Trio Guide Rail and Vertical Cutter is a little confusing. Perhaps I should have watched the DVD first, a simple anatomy sheet would have benefitted me anyway.

In terms of how it does its job, however, no complaints at all. The cutter performs exactly as you would expect and even cuts mounts perfectly square. This might seem a small point but I have used mount cutters that fall down on this basic task.

You get everything you need - except card - to cut high quality window mounts.

Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter: Verdict
If you need or want a window mount cutter, you will have to go a very long way to surpass this Longridge unit. It is well made, delivers a quality cut and gives a lovely finishing touch to your crafted prints. It might sound expensive but if you want a professional look to your photo masterpieces, £250 is a small price to pay.

Small footprint compared with some mount cutters

Longridge Trio Midi mount cutter: Cons
