PLUS the chance to WIN a fabulous Dell Outlet Inspiron Notebook worth around
you have a Dell Outlet Notebook or desktop PC and a digital camera, you have
everything you need to get started in digital photography. Some useful photo
management tools are built into Windows XP Home, the most popular PC operating
system in the world, as pre-installed on all Dell Outlet computers. Although
these tools are never designed to be a replacement for a full-blown image manipulation
program such as Photoshop, it's good to know that they're there - and how to
1 Before you open any digital photos, click on the Start button at the
bottom left of the Windows screen and you will notice a folder called My Pictures.
This serves as a useful storage space for your photos as you can keep everything
together, but your photos can be put anywhere.
2 Look down the side of this folder and you'll notice some
handy tools listed under 'Picture Tasks'. Particularly helpful is the 'View
as slide show' function, which enables you to view a sequence of pictures full
screen, or the CD copying tool for storing photos on a disc - a great way to
use the CD-RW drive on your Dell Outlet computer!
3 Double click on a photo stored in My Pictures (or anywhere
else on your Dell PC) and the image opens in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
This is a simple, straightforward image viewer that includes a bar of useful
tools running along the bottom, such as zoom, rotate and print. Find out what
each icon does by running your mouse cursor over it.
4 Click the right mouse button (or right trackpad button)
on your Dell Outlet PC and you can access all these tools instead of having
to keep going down to the icons. You can also access other useful extras, such
as the ability to set an image as the desktop pattern, or wallpaper, on your
PC. Right mouse clicking also enables you to open the photo in Paint, another
nifty free accessory.
5 Paint is a pretty self explanatory program for adding painterly and
other artistic effects to photos or creating your own images from scratch. You
can use Paint's basic pencil and fill (spray can) tools to get rid of red eye
- the bane of any digital photographer. Make sure you zoom into the photo as
closely as possible and work on the subject's eyes pixel by pixel, blacking
out the red with care. Then save over the original.
6 While Paint is no match for a professional graphics program,
it's still got hidden depths. Check out the Help database for some good insights
into photo enhancement and correction. Photos can be easily resized by the Image
menu, where you can also do cool stuff like turn colour into black and white,
or edit individual colours.
7 Before we leave Paint, it's worth checking out the Text tool (symbolised
by an A on the toolbar to the left). This enables you to superimpose text over
a photo and style the text using different fonts, sizes and colours. A nice
effect, and a good way to label photos for posterity, so long as you don't get
8 Finally, don't forget that modern printers usually come with sophisticated
free software (this can often be updated via the printer maker's web site, too).
This Canon printer software, for example, allows you to enhance the image before
you print, and even add monochrome and sepia effects. We've covered the basic
Windows tools for digital photographers here, but don't forget you can obtain
extra expansion packs and 'power toys' for Windows by going to the Microsoft
web site at www.microsoft.co.uk.
