Microsoft Release RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer Plugin for Windows XP - New update allows Windows to generate thumbnails and previews of RAW files taken with most popular digital SLR cameras.

The Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer is a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows XP that provides thumbnails, previews, printing, and metadata display for RAW images from supported Canon and Nikon digital cameras. This tool enables digital photographers to organize and work with RAW files within Windows in much the same way as with JPEG images. No more guessing which image is which!

The following cameras are currently supported by the new update:
Canon EOS 1D, 1Ds, 1D MkII, 1Ds MkII, D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 300D, 350D
Canon Powershot G2, G3, G5, G6, Pro1, S30, S50, S70
Nikon D-series D1, D1x, D2H, D2X, D70, D100
Nikon Coolpix 8800, 5700
Microsoft state that other camera models may work, but haven't been tested with the new update.

The future updates will include all the following file formats the following RAW formats:
Vendor File Extension Camera Models
Canon TIF EOS1D, EOS1Ds
CRW EOSD30, D60, 10D, 300D, various Powershot Models
CR2 EOS20D, 1D MkII, 1Ds MkII, EOS350D
Nikon NEF Nikon D-series SLRs and various Coolpix models
Kodak DCR Kodak DCS camera models
Olympus ORF Olympus E-series camera models
Fuji RAF Fuji S-series camera models

I've had thin on my PC for a couple of months. Works fine but takes a few seconds to create the thumbnails when first opening the folder but that is a once only activity.

The link above is to the latest release of the raw viewer - it appears to fix a bug in the earlier release that caused some files to become 'locked', i.e. they were prevented from being moved or deleted. (Which was driving me mad!)
