MIT researchers make a large, flexible camera - University researchers make a tiny camera that could be weaved into clothing.
Posted: 18th June 2009
What do you get if you take some sensors and put them into a plastic fibre sheet? Well researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have made a large flexible camera. This new type of camera was created by a research group led by Yoel Fink, a professor of materials sciences and engineering. While normal cameras have lenses, one made from fibres would be lightweight and could even be folded away, something Yole believes could be used in a large foldable telescope or integrated into soldiers' uniforms.
According to Technology Review, the researchers embedded eight semiconducting light sensors
around the centre of the fibre allowing it to detect light from various angles. The sensor can also identify the angle at which light hits the fibre, which according to the researchers would make 3D imaging theoretically possible.
Another research group at MIT have recently released news about new batteries that will charge in seconds.
