Bowmore photography contest winner announced - Bowmore announces winners of 2010 National Geographic International photography contest.
A stunning image of a pair of horses and a depiction of a stormy seascape are announced winners of the National Geographic 2010 International Photography Contest sponsored by Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky.
Over 1,000 people from UK and Ireland, and Sweden submitted their best photographs inspired by three themes: People, Places and Nature. The photography competition forms part of Bowmore’s wider campaign that celebrates nature and the outdoors.
The winners, Ciaran Cunningham from South-West Ireland and Andreas Edman from Nyhamnsläg, Sweden, have won a truly unforgettable trip for two to the home of Bowmore, Islay, and both pieces of work will star in a future Bowmore advertising campaign in National Geographic Magazine. The two runner-ups in UK and Ireland, and Sweden have also won £100 worth of National Geographic merchandise and a bottle of Bowmore Single Malt whisky and a pair of Bowmore’s unique whisky nosing glasses.
The entries were judged by an esteemed panel of judges, which consisted of:
- Monica Corcoran, Senior Photo Editor, National Geographic Magazine Online
- Laura Denardo, International Photographer
- Cristina Creager, Photo Editor and Art Director
- Joachim Ladefoged, renowned Danish National Geographic Photographer
- Håkan Andersson, Art Director
- Karen Gunn, Editor-in-Chief, Nordic National Geographic Magazines
"What stands out for me about this photograph are the colours," said freelance photo editor and fellow judge, Cristina Creager, noting: "The colours of the horses are echoed in the background and the detail in the horses makes for an outstanding photograph."
Among many exciting entries, the Swedish judging panel awarded Andreas Edman the first prize for the beautiful drama and contrasting softness in the sea, dark clouds and the stormy evening sky that make up his ‘Dramatic Surf’. Karen Gunn, Editor-in-Chief of Nordic National Geographic Magazines, comments: “It is a technically beautiful image with a great atmosphere and depth. It is almost as if two photos have been welded together with the patterns in the sky and in the water.”
