Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm Hands-On Preview - We go hands-on with the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm lens and compare it to the previous version at Focus.

The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens was just announced yesterday, and was on show at Focus on Imaging 2013, we had a look and compared it to the previous model. It is noticeably larger, more modern looking, and we look forward to testing it when available. It will be available from the 19th of March in stores, priced at £2499.

Compared to the old 80-400mm model, you can see how the design of Nikon lenses has changed over the years, with control of aperture now done on the camera body rather than on a lens ring.

The side switches give you the choice of AF/M, M/A, or Manual focus, Full or limited range focus, VR Vibration reduction on/off, active or normal, and the lens can be locked at 80mm for transport. The tripod collar is also removable.

Looks great - does the lens extend when zooming like the original lens?
