Páramo are once again pioneering the way forward in outdoor gear with ground-breaking developments in comfort and safety from two launches this September. The Torres overlayering range expands further with the introduction of insulating sleeves and trousers which are innovative both in design and in application. Overlayering provides a practical and superior alternative to the conventional layering approach to stay warm and dry in the cold and wet, applicable to all outdoor enthusiasts and professionals - and the new Torres garments offer a simple but radical way of achieving this easily. They really need to be seen and tried to be understood and believed.
Páramo have always offered different solutions to outdoor challenges – whether it is more effectively removing perspiration that would chill the wearer to offering reversible base layers that are effectively two garments in one. Torres overlayers are such an innovation – a range of four garments that provide fast block insulation when needed with a speedy impact on whole body comfort. The moisture-repellent synthetic fill has a down-like feel and performance, delivering a high warmth-for-weight ratio that keep one warm even if wet. Garments prevent heat loss, increase insulation and add water resistance.
All Torres overlayers allow rapid but simple ‘on the move’ temperature adjustment in situations where conventional mid layers are difficult and slow to use. Carrying a fleece or other extra baselayers to put on if one is cold or anticipating feeling chilled when stationary is largely impractical – it requires one to extract the fleece from one’s pack, with the potential for it to become wet before one even dons it; it means removing one’s weatherproof outer, exposing one to the cold and wet and forfeiting any body heat. As a result, in such circumstances, individuals often struggle on rather than stop to put on extra insulation because of the hassle involved. Overlayering solves this dilemma, as Torres overlayers are simply taken out of the pack and worn over a waterproof, trapping body heat, keeping out the weather and working to insulate one even when wet or when worn over wet garments.
In developing the overlayering concept, designer Greg Care says, "Clearly the longer you can wear your clothing and the less you need to make changes the better. Páramo already offers a major advantage here because you can wear it 24 hours a day - no difficult changes or loss of insulation. Add overlayers and there is a huge gain in heat retention which is speed-critical at altitude.
With regard to the new Torres Sleeves and Torres Trousers, special attention has been given to garment design to enable application to be as hassle-free and safe as possible: The Torres Sleeves are fast and easy to put on/ remove with a simple pullover design. There is no need to remove a rucksack or harness to add or remove sleeves, ideal in awkward situations such as on a climbing route. This innovative development recognises the crucial role the arms play in the body’s temperature control and crucially the sleeves provide rapid insulation to support circulation to the hands, helping to maintain dexterity – vital for climbers or photographers, for example. They improve insulation further by reducing air movement via underarm adjustment and elasticated wrists. When worn, they don’t restrict arm movement or the functionality of hoods, packs etc.
The Torres Trousers have a innovative zip on/ zip off construction which allows total removal or application without taking one’s feet off ground or needing to sit down – perfect on an exposed ledge when climbing, in the dark or when wearing skis, for example. Cut to fit over other trousers or over a climbing harness, they are fully articulated for ease of movement making them particularly practical in bivouac and survival situations as mobility is not compromised – a really practical survival aid. Effective in wet and windy weather as well as extreme cold, they work just as well when wet or worn over wet legwear or wet legs.
The Torres Sleeves and Torres Trousers are ideal for any activity which might involve periods of sustained low temperatures such as winter climbers and walkers, alpine or arctic explorers, skiers, Mountain Rescue, wildlife observers and outdoor photographers. They are low bulk and easily compressed in a pack without damage. All Torres garments can be washed and water-repellency restored in a washing machine with Nikwax aftercare products. The fabric’s toughness and durability, and high UV resistance make the garments highly practical – contrasted with the fact that they are soft and comfortable enough even to sleep in.
Designer Greg Care concludes, “I guarantee that this piece will not only amuse your friends but also give you an extra – often essential – bit of comfort in the most extreme of circumstances. To me it represents what Páramo is about – innovation, greater comfort, real functionality….and controversy!
