From Ricoh Imaging UK:

Meet the PENTAX K-S1, the latest digital SLR to join the RICOH IMAGING UK family. Featuring outstanding imaging performance, progressive design and an innovative illuminated body, the K-S1 rivals even high-end models.

Designed for photographers who take pictures wherever they go, whether that’s on a smartphone or tablet, the PENTAX K-S1 ups the ante when it comes to image quality, while still offering a great lightweight, compact and portable option.

Featuring a body that bucks the trend of conventional digital SLR camera design, this camera also boasts an innovative illumination interface system that intuitively reacts to changes in camera operation from stills to video, ensuring the K-S1 stands out in the crowd.

K S1 Sunset Orange

This new model also comes in 12 different colour variations to suit your own personal style and taste. These include Black, Blue and White as standard, four models from ‘the Fabric collection’, which recreates the colour and tone of materials with Cotton Beige, Linen Brown, Denim Blue, Tweed Gray; and five from ‘the Night Sky collection’, which reflect the colour changes in the sky from sunset to dawn with Sunset Orange, Dusk Gold, Moon Silver, Midnight Black, and Dawn Purple.

If you’re looking for high-end specs the PENTAX K-S1 really does have it all. From the PENTAX-developed AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator (first introduced on the PENTAX K-3); and an optical viewfinder offering 100% field of view; to an built-in shake reduction mechanism; and a top sensitivity of ISO 51200. All of these features combine to provide an exceptional digital imaging performance that will satisfy photographers of all levels — from first-time SLR users to experienced photo enthusiasts.

I hope there's more to it than flashing lights and odd colours (being polite).

There's no doubt that the image quality and performance will be excellent.

Do you really need to have a camera that lights up like an Xmas tree?

There's no doubt that most users are aware if they are in still or movie mode without needing gimmicks.

Yes, it will definitely stand out in a crowd.

Bizarre concept. Would the guy who really wants a brown camera also want flashing LEDs? Hope there's an off-switch.

Now to me it looks really interesting !!......I like the look of the rear-screen layout, simple & bold; & the mode dial on the back is so refreshing, &
I believe the viewfinder covers 100% of the image ?

Looks to be quite compact, with a sensible weight.......I'd have to stick to black though, & hopefully those battery-sapping LED's can be turned off !!

My first DSLR was/is a Pentax istDL2 (6MGPX), which can still turn out great image quality......so with 20MGPX to play with the IQ should be
really top notch....??

Look forward to the EPZ review, to see what this little gem can do !!!!!.Smile

What is happening to Pentax, are they trying to go out of business?

The competition laps them and they come out with a blinking dslr?

On top of that although they shrink it down to minimum size, they bundle it with the out of proportion kit lens instead of a nice cheapo prime (DA35, DA40) which could justify the high RRP.

Come on Pentax, step up your game!

I would rather have quality over fancy gimmicks to be honest, It may have both right enough only a full test will clarify. But it looks like they are promoting this as more of a fashion accessory, I cant see a illuminated body improving the quality of my photography.

With only 2% [so I read] of the DSLR market world wide, [ which is shrinking for all makes], Pentax/Ricoh must be getting desperate to use these gimmicks. They introduced various colour bodies some time back to try and attract the younger buyers but I'm not sure how successful that was. I hope Pentax DSLR's have a future but please Pentax it really is time you introduced an articulated LCD.
