Pentax U.K. today announces the new Optio E40, an entry-level compact digital camera, which is designed to deliver effortless high-resolution photography, even for beginners. The latest Optio E40 features Pentax's Face Recognition AF and AE technology for premium quality people shots. Novices and those looking for a great all-round camera for holidays and special occasions will not be disappointed because of blurred pictures, thanks to the new Shake Reduction mode which reduces the effects of camera shake and subject blurring. This model also offers 8.1 effective Mp's, offering superb fine picture quality not normally found in other entry - level cameras.
The Optio E40 is the latest addition to Pentax's Optio E series offering world leading optics and a premium photographic experience in an easy to use package - all at a competitive price.
Like its predecessor, this camera features a Green mode which automates settings and offers users a quick and intuitive way to start shooting. It comes with 10MB of built-in memory and supports both SD and SDHC memory. The camera has been designed to specifically to use less power. It takes AA batteries which are easily found no matter where they are in the world. The Optio E40 will be on sale from August 2007 and the price is still to be confirmed.
Face Recognition AF and AE for even better people shots and portraits.
The Optio E40 comes with a Face Recognition AF and AE function, which delivers effortlessly high quality people shots, thanks to the camera's ability to detect and recognise faces, immediately determining the correct focus and exposure. In addition, the camera can automatically select exposure to ensure that faces are not underexposed even if there is backlighting.
Digital SR (Shake Reduction)
This setting reduces the impact of camera shaking when photographing still subjects. Light sensitivity is adjusted automatically, (as high as ISO1000) matching that of the subject, thus enabling fast shutter speed photography, but with a substantial reduction in blurring.
Auto Picture mode automatically determines the best settings for shooting conditions
The camera intuitively determines whether a shot works best in Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene or Normal setting. This is an original Pentax function which makes for easy and fuss free photography.
8.1 effective Megapixels for standout quality photos
With 8.1 effective megapixels, the Optio E40 delivers exceptionally high-resolution photos which capture images down to the finest detail. Few entry-level series cameras can boast this kind of resolution.
Compatibility with widely available AA batteries
Since the camera accepts widely available AA-size batteries, users will have no problem obtaining new batteries whether at home or abroad. Furthermore, the camera has been designed specifically to use less power so that you can now take approximately 240 photos when running on alkaline batteries. That's 40 photos more than on the previous model.
Equipped with the Green mode for automated setup
The Optio E40 comes with the Green mode, which automates the camera setup when shooting still images. This allows even complete digital-camera beginners to enjoy picture-taking effortlessly. A single press of a button automatically sets the exposure, sensitivity, white balance, and other parameters according to the shooting conditions. This function is useful when asking someone else to take your picture or when you have simply lost track of the camera settings.
3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom for a maximum of about 12x magnification
The Optio E40 features a 3x optical zoom lens with a focal range covering angles of view equivalent to those of a 37.5-112.5mm lens in 35mm format. This is ideal for taking pictures of a broad spectrum of subjects from landscapes, through sightseeing photographs, to portraits. Such zooming power can also be combined with 4x digital zoom to achieve a total of about 12x zoom capability.
