Pub signs - Make yourself a little photography project.
Everyone likes a tipple in the summer sun and what better excuse to have a pint (or two) than a pub sign photography project. Everyone has a local to take a photo then work your way, on foot if you plan on having a pint, through your town photographing pub signs as you go.

Gear
Your DSLR and a standard lens is all you need for this project. But if you don't want kit weighing you down pocket a compact with a good zoom to snap signs as you walk by.
Technique
Photographing a pub sign isn't the most complicated bit of photography you'll ever do – which if you're staying for a drink or three is probably a good thing! Just make sure you've framed tightly, your shots straight, in focus and away you go. If you find you're getting glare from the paint fit a polarising filter. It will also help enhance the sky, particularly if you do your snaps on a day when it's looking very blue. Keep an eye on your exposure too as a bright sky will fool your camera and your shots could come out underexposed.
