Along with Sony's recent announcement of new high speed CMOS sensors, this is proof that the line drawn between still photography and video technologies is becoming blurred to the point of integration.

Although this camera is intended purely as a professional cinematic tool, the sensor technology employed is not dissimilar to that used in today's high-end digital still cameras.

Specifications of the Red camera are as follows:

Sensor Size: 24.4 x 13.7mm (Equivalent to 35mm cin film)
Active pixels array: 4520 x 2540 (11.4 million pixels)
Dynamic range: >66dB
Depth-of -field: Equivalent to 35mm
Frame Rate: 1-60fps at full resolution
RAW output: 1-60 fps at full resolution
1-120fps at quarter resolution
Video outputs: Single and dual link HD-SDI
Digital media magazine: FireWire 800/400, USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces
Audio: 4 channel, uncompressed

Weight: Less than 7lbs (without lens)

Lens mount P/L type

Red camera have released the following details about the technology and systems employed:

Mysterium Sensor
4520X2540 pixelsData to burn. At the heart of Red lives the 12 megapixel Mysterium CMOS sensor, Super 35mm sized, with unparalleled fidelity and flexibility. It combines low noise with superior charge capacity for dynamic range and colour fidelity that allows you to finally have a no excuse option to 35mm film.

Pixel shifting and up-resizing not spoken here.

Typical high-end HD camcorders have 2.1 megapixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 colour subsampled video at up to 30fps. We deliver 11.4M pixels at up to 60fps and record RAW, or 2x over-sampled HD in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 your choice. Thats more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality. Dont need all that data for your workflow? Dial it back, and keep all the other advantages of the Mysterium Super 35mm cine sized (24.4 x 13.7mm) sensor. You get the same breathtaking Depth of Field and selective focus as found in film cameras. Mysterium boasts a greater than 66db Signal to Noise Ratio thanks to its large 29 sq. micron pixels. And 11,480,800 pixels deliver resolution that can only be called Ultra High Definition.

Shoot lightweight ENG style (body less than 7 lbs., in rugged magnesium alloy) or load it up to shoot a feature film. Initial options will include Red-Cage for mounting accessories and growing the camera body. Configure for studio pedestal, crane or long lens applications. Red-Gun lets you shoot from the hip, or shoulder like a rifle. On-board or external high-resolution Red monitors come equipped with advanced tools for framing, exposure and focus. The Red One camera has numerous stainless steel mounting points on the body to allow hundreds of optional Red and third party accessories... some that havent even been dreamed of yet.

Red renders obsolescence, obsolete
Modular and upgradeable, the Red One camera is a future-proof acquisition system you can build upon. Reds modular design means you can upgrade with us as we add new features, accessories and improve system specifications.

Red have also announced 300mm f/2.8 and 17-100mm lenses to compliment the system.

The camera will cost $17,500 (approximately 9500).

Am I the only one surprised at the price ?? ... I thought it would be costing the price of a small terraced house in Aberystwyth.

The price seems reasonable If it can do what it claims?

Then probably expect to pay the same for the 2 lenses!

How long before we get posts... "videographer wants to earn money as a wedding photographer"...?

I spoke to them today. I was told that I had to order it UNSEEN.

The words whistle and they can, come to to mind.

What size hard-drive would you need for a polished fully edited 10 minute short movie with this thing. What is the recorded media stored on? An external hard-drive strapped to your belt? Sounds like the final cost of this thing may well be the same as a small supercar...
