The Samsung has built in colour calibration, and is tuned at the factory for excellent uniformity across the screen. The frame is made out of metal, and the screen has a "Crystal Clear" glass panel, which can be adjusted for height.

The screen has 178 degree viewing angles both vertically and horizontally for clear viewing even if viewing from a different angle.

The screen is a high resolution unit with a 2560 x 1440 display, and requires a dual link DVI cable (these use more pins than standard DVI cables). This enables an excellent workspace, allowing you to easily view windows side by side.

The monitor has built in speakers for use with the DisplayPort or HDMI input. Alternatively there is no audio jack input.

On the base of the screen are connections for power, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB from PC, as well as two USB ports on the side.

The Samsung is extremely stylish with a stylish round base, with a neat control panel in the middle. This is easy to use except for when you have the monitor at it's lowest position, as this blocks access to it.

Samsung Skyler Shot

Samsung Skyler Photo, the photo of the screen was taken with a Canon Powershot SX160 IS. Photos look excellent on the monitor. Colours look great with excellent contrast between blacks and whites. Black and white photos look particularly impressive thanks to the gloss finish.

Natural Colour Expert software comes with the monitor on CD, however this needs an optional calibration device, such as the Spyder 4 (although it didn't accept this device as a suitable calibration device), to calibrate the monitor. The manual says the software is compatible with xrite calibrators.

Samsung 27inch Srgb Results
Samsung 27inch sRGB Results

Using the Spyder4 Elite, we were able to test the colour performance of the Samsung, and it said it provided 99% of the sRGB colour gamut (78% AdobeRGB). We also ran the Spyder4Elite to calibrate the screen and switching between the before and after comparisons, there was very little difference, showing that the performance of the monitor is very good straight out of the box. Running a full range of tests using the Spyder4 Elite the screen scored extremely highly, with a 5/5 rating for Gamut and Colour Uniformity, as well as 4.5 for Tone Response, White Point, Luminance Uniformity, and Colour Accuracy, with the only weakness the Contrast score of 3.5. You can view the full scores here.

Value For Money

The Samsung is available for £750 making it quite an expensive monitor compared to more typical 27inch monitors, however very few are as stylish as this monitor. The typical 27inch monitor with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) is available for £200 to £260, while other monitors with a high 2560 x 1944 resolution, such as the EIZO FlexScan SX2762W are available for around £750 but has a matt screen, AdobeRGB as well as sRGB, the Dell Ultrasharp U2711 is available for around £550, while the NEC MultiSync PA271W is available for around £993 with a 3 year warranty.

Samsung 27inch S27B970D Series 9 Quad HD LED Verdict

The Samsung 27inch Series 9 LED monitor looks excellent with gorgeous colour reproduction and a high resolution screen, however with the gloss reflective screen (which helps photos pop) you do need to be careful about where you place the monitor to avoid distracting reflections, these are particularly noticeable with black backgrounds. Performance out of the box is very good, and even without calibrating the monitor manually, the screen gives very good results. If you work in a standard office with bright lights and large windows, the reflective screen may not be ideal, but if you're in control of your environment and work in a less bright office, then this screen should be very high on your wish list.

The Samsung 27inch Series 9 Monitor is extremely stylish and has excellent quality and performance.
