Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG announced
Sigma launch new 170-500mm f/5-6.3 DG lens - a compact ultra telephoto zoom lens covering a useful range up to 500mm.

The new multi-layer lens coating and lens design reduces flare and ghosting, and creates an optimum color balance resulting in better picture quality through the entire zoom range on both film and digital SLRs.

This lens uses one aspherical lens and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements for excellent correction of chromatic aberration, making high-quality images a reality throughout the entire zoom range.

Since the front of the lens does not rotate during focusing, a circular polarizing filter can easily be attached and used. A lens hood and removable tripod collar are included as standard components.

The price does not seem bad, well to me anyway, but then I could be wrong. Any thoughts on this ?

Pickup th non-DG version for 450. It was an execelent performer on a digital body. I'm sure the old version was F4 at 170mm too.

Very sharp at 500mm, and execclent value. However note the min focusing distance of 3m and the 'relaxed' focusing speed.

I prefer the 50-500mm, much more flexible...

I'd go down the route of the 70-200 f2.8 (can pick one up for 599)and a teleconverter when needed Smile

I'll go with osman123 on this, prefer the HSM version of the 50-500.
