Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM

Sigma has announced the launch of a new compact high zoom ratio lens.

It covers wide angle, telephoto and macro photography, making it a very versatile lens.

By revolutionising the optical and structural design of the Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM, this new lens achieves a compact size and a minimum focusing distance of 35cm. Sigma’s newly developed material, Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), which maintains its structure and has little contractility especially in varying temperatures, is incorporated into the lens barrel. Its small size and huge focal-range make it perfect for travel photographers and those who like to keep equipment down to a minimum.

This is the first lens to use Thermally Stable Composite (TSC). This is a unique product that’s been developed in conjunction with a specialist manufacturer. This material is unique to Sigma and has metal like characteristics. This new material has overcome the temperature expansion and contraction problems associated with plastic casings, meaning that tighter construction using thinner and lighter materials can be achieved.

Sigma’s own unique Optical Stabiliser (OS) function is incorporated into this lens. It offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops which makes it possible to compensate camera shake even in macro range photography where a small blur can be easily identified.

The lens is able to auto focus quickly and quietly thanks to its Hyper Sonic Motor. The close-up capability is improved with the minimum focusing distance of just 35cm throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9.

The lens is priced at £499.99 and will be available in the UK by the end of next week (Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts only. Pentax and Sony fit to follow shortly). Visit Sigma more for more information. More pictures are available in our hands-on look at the lens.

Interesting! This could be just what I'm looking for if the optics are up to the mark. I await reviews with interest.

Great lens, got fedup changing lens to get closeups of flowers then back to the 55-250 lens for wildlife. This lens covers 18-250mm so no need to change lenses.Less chance of dust getting in during lens change as you just leave it on all the time.Shots are clear and sharp as the Cannon 55-250 that I had (now sold).Very smooth zooming in and out, sturdy made and the lens hood is a bonus for very sunny days to stop lens flare.Pretty expensive but it saves a lot of hassle and how much for two lenses?.
