Sigma announce Nikon zoom lens - Sigma have announced the release of the new Nikon fit 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.
Due to the unexpected launch of the Nikon D40 and D40x, there has been a slight delay to the release of the Nikon fit, Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS. This delay was due to a re-design of the AF motor, but we are now pleased to announce the availability of the new 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS in Nikon mount which now includes Sigma’s HSM motor at no extra charge, making it fully compatible with the Nikon D40 and D40x cameras.
This high zoom ratio lens is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras and is capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto. It is equipped with Sigma’s own unique OS (Optical Stabiliser) function. This function uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera and works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports.
Two SLD Special Low Dispersion glass elements and three aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens provides superior image quality throughout the entire zoom range.
An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using circular polarising filters and the petal-type lens hood supplied.
A review of the lens in the September issue of Practical Photography said "the levels of sharpness are impressive at most focal lengths with the aperture wide open to around f/11… the OS system allows you to handhold with slow shutter speeds. The 18-200mm OS produces excellent levels of sharpness considering the wide focal range that it offers."
