The Sony Alpha a99 is designed to provide the Best IQ: with an Exmor full frame 24.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, new optical low-pass filter, ISO100-25600 (expandable), High speed front end, area specific noise reduction, 200,000 shutter life cycle, 6fps burst shooting, BIONZ processor.
It is designed to be leading edge, with high reliability, and features fully fledged Sony movie recording with Full HD at 60,50,25,24 fps.
Sony Alpha a99 Key Features:
- Exmor CMOS sensor, 24.3mp, the new sensor has been developed with light-concentration technology, photo diode expansion technology for larger photo diodes on the sensor, a multi-segment optical low pass filter (new) - Sony has been challenged previously regarding noise performance at ISO1600 and above in the past in full frame cameras and this has been designed to resolve this.
- BIONZ new (high end front end LSI), 14 bit RAW, area specific noise reduction,

The AF Range selection looks interesting, wonder how practicable it is to use though ?
Is it the same as the AF limiter on lenses ?
Are epz aware of any Sony or photographic retailers giving presentations / events in the UK where one can get a hands on look at this camera ?
There is a dedicated button on the back, it is a limited number of lenses that will support dual phase detection AF:
24-70/2.8 ZA
70-400/4-5.6G
50/1.4
28-75/2.8
500/4
300/2.8
There is the plan to expand this but there needs to be indepth analysis of the lenses before hand.
While it is definitely an upgrade from the A99, I believe Sony is holding something back. Why doesn't it shoot as fast as the A77? It's the same number of megapixels, and this is a year later! Why doesn't it shoot at higher resolution than the 4 year old A900, if it's only going to shoot one frame per second faster? It's the same price, after-all. Although I am very happy that they have included live-view and a fold-out screen (the first full-frame camera in the World with this feature), I think this camera is somewhat disappointing (slow). For the money, I think it should match the speed of the A77. I also think it should have had a bigger review screen than the A77 and A65. I like the new extras that it has, but for twice the price of the A77, I think we can expect a couple of extras. Maybe Sony doesn't want to spoil us, or maybe Sony thinks the A77 sales will be hurt, if they match the functionality of the A77 (as far as speed is concerned) with the A99. I wonder if Sony is trying to sell two camera bodies to photographers who can afford that.
Whatever . . . this is surely a step in the right direction for Sony's full-frame offerings . . . finally. I'm hoping Sony will introduce a new, higher resolution camera next. Maybe they could call it the A1. If they do, I hope it's 36 MP and shoots at 12 fps.
