Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 Features

The Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 is waterproof to 10m and is dust, freeze and shockproof. It has a 16.1 megapixel CCD sensor and a 4x optical zoom lens, which is a 35mm equivalent of 25-100mm. To reduce camera shake there is Optical SteadyShot.

When shooting there is Intelligent Auto mode which adjusts the camera settings automatically. There are also a number of scene modes and picture effects. There is also a Sweep Panorama mode - you just press the shutter and sweep the camera across the scene. When shooting portraits the camera can automatically remove skin blemishes, brighten teeth, widen eyes and reduce forehead shine.

Videos are recorded in 720p HD.

Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 Handling

The Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 has a plastic body, with a rubber grip on the front. Where your left hand holds the camera is also rubberised, with an indent for your right hand thumb. On top of the camera is an on / off button, shutter release and zoom rocker.

There is a button on the rear to switch between image shooting (this includes Intelligent Auto, P, scene and picture effect modes), panorama and video modes. Other buttons on the rear include playback, menu and ? / delete buttons as well as a d-pad for cycling through the menus.

The TF1 has an easy to use menu system, when adjusting the shooting settings there is a sentence to explain what each option does. The LCD is a little small at 2.7 inch, but has a decent 460k dot resolution, although it's a little hard to view in bright conditions.

Battery life is rated at 200 shots according to CIPA test results. We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

Shutter Response   0.15 secs

Sample Photos - Images are well exposed with good colour reproduction. Portraits have good skin tones but there is lots of red-eye when shooting with the flash. Underwater performance is also good.

Lens Performance - Image detail isn't great, the pictures produced are best for sharing on the web rather than large prints. Purple fringing is kept under control. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 1cm, so you can take decent macro shots.

ISO Noise Performance - Noise is low at ISO 100 and 200, but image quality starts to suffer at ISO 400. Images are soft ISO 800 with a substantial amount of detail lost at ISO 1600. Image quality is very poor at ISO 3200.

White Balance Performance - Under the incandescent lights auto white balance (AWB) performance is good, as is the incandescent preset. The AWB setting also performs well under the fluorescent lights, the three fluorescent presets all take images with a colour cast present.

Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 Verdict

The Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1 is available at a decent price for a waterproof camera but unfortunately image quality is poor. If you're looking for a waterproof camera and you only share images on the web, then you might be quite happy with what the images produced, particularly as colour reproduction is decent. Overall, we suggest you look around at the alternative waterproof cameras on the market.
