Sony lend their name to the budget class with a 7Mp, 3x optical zoom compact. Coupled with video mode, AA battery compatability and point and shoot simplicity.

A budget camera to suit the snap happy crowd. This camera won't jump through hoops, but will take pictures that you can enlarge to A3 with ease. The 3x optical zoom is only standard, but is sufficient for pictures of the kids in the sea so the camera doesn't get wet. The camera isn't waterproof or sandproof.

The screen is a little small by today's standards. The S650 comes with an internal memory to store pictures on when the card is full. This can only be used in an emergency as it won't hold many.

Suitable for: Portraits, General holiday snaps.

What everyone else says:
Cameras.co.uk:
"Shutter lag with the flash, the performance of the LCD in bright sunshine and the lack of sharpness it the outdoor shots are all major drawbacks."

Steve's Digicams: "While it has plenty of positive points like good image quality, performance, loads of exposure modes, and a durable all-metal body. We did find some negatives as well. very slow flash recharge, poorly placed (plastic) tripod socket, low quality movie mode, and small 2.0-inch LCD that is very difficult to see on a bright sunny day."

Sony Cybershot DSC S650 Our verdict
A straight forward point and shooter, this compact has what you need if you just want a camera to go on holiday with and, due to the price, not worry too much if you ruin it.

What it does do is take capable photos for you to stick in an album and show to your friends and family. If you're the kind of person that fits into that category, then buy this camera. If you want more from it, then look at something else.

The Sony DSC S650 costs around £79 and is available from the ePHOTOzine shop here.
