Sony has announced the World's first compact camera with a 35mm full frame sensor, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 features a full-frame 24.3 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, the same sensor will be used in the Sony Alpha a99, and Sony Handycam NEX-VG900E. Sony say the strength of this camera is in the fixed lens design, allowing a beautiful compact body.

" ...A full frame compact camera didn't exist until now ..."

I call BS - what a terrible piece of reporting.

Leica M9?

Ok not cheap, but it does exist.

It's not really a camera for portraits is it? Unless you mean full-figure portraits the AoV of this lens is going to give horrible distortion.

I'm in two minds on whether or not a [probably stop slower?] lens more like a pancake wouldn't have made this a more portable and therefore more attractive package.

Nevertheless this does look like a fairly unique and fairly compelling camera. I can't help thinking that a top ISO of 25,600 is a bit disappointing given the size of the sensor. CaNikon go two-three stops better with their 35mm equiv and many APSCs [probably using Sony sensors!] are offering the same maximum sensitivity. That fast lens is still going to make it a great low-light performer, but it just seems a shame that they're unable to squeeze every last drop out of that.

I'm never likely to own one of these [poverty], but if I had unlimited cash, or was making a lot from the sort of photography this should be great for, I'd be in the queue.

It's not terrible reporting. It's our house style. We have (like most of the industry) split cameras into sectors / categories. The Leica M9 is a digital rangefinder, there also compact system cameras, single lens reflex cameras and compact cameras (fixed lens) to name a few
