The  winning images from the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards will be available for viewing this week in London.

Everything from photojournalism to sport are covered and the images will be on show at the Art Work Space until the 29th January.

Press Release:
An exhibition showcasing winning and finalist photographs of the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards, the global competition for both professional and amateur photographers, opens in London on 20 January.

It is the first time the tour has visited the UK and the London date is the last stop of a tour which has already visited prestigious photographic institutions in New York, Bangkok, Toronto, Mexico and Paris.

The free exhibition will be at Art Work Space Gallery at The Hempel Hotel and will run until 29 January. Photographers expected at the opening night include Nadav Kander, Adrian Boot, Jonathan Torgovnik, Idris Khan and Pablo Bartholomew and World Photographic Academy members such as Gered Mankowitz and Vanessa Winship.

Covering a range of genres from photojournalism to fashion, portraiture to sport, the show has been curated by Zelda Cheatle and honours some of the world's leading photographers. Included in this striking exhibition will be images from winning UK photographers Edgar Martins, Tamany Baker, Yannick Dixon, Dylan Collard, Dave Watts and Amiran White.

The winning photographs were selected by the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards Honorary Judging Committee, which comprises leading figures from the international photographic community, such as photographers Bruce Davidson, Sarah Moon and Mary Ellen Mark, Christie’s Director of Photographs, Philippa Garner, Panos Pictures agency director Adrian Evans and others. The winning photographs were chosen from over 60,000 images submitted from 139 countries.

Curator and 2009 Honorary Judge Zelda Cheatle comments: "Each of these pictures has a place, a purpose, show talent or skill. They have forethought, expertise or have humour, audacity, a concept, an issue or an opinion. This exhibition reflects the diversity of material, the range and depth of the response and the vibrant qualities that photography offers."
