Backdrops and Backgrounds is a book dedicated to teaching portrait photographers what backgrounds will work best with which shots.
We are first taught about different materials that can be used for backdrops, and the benefits and drawbacks of them – mainly to do with the amount they'll crease. Then the book looks at painted and printed backdrops, before moving on to paper backdrops that will create a flawless look, and flooring and floor drops.
We then learn how to create a pure white background, using lighting and camera settings, along with pure black backgrounds and shaded backgrounds. Also covered are digital and portable backdrops. We are told how to correctly set up backdrops, and given ideas for more creative backdrops, like using beads and paper-chains to create some interest.
The book also looks at using natural scenes as backgrounds. Taken into consideration are different times of day and how to compose your shots effectively among other things.
If you're looking to use backgrounds more in your work and feel you need a helping hand, then this book will provide that. If you're a complete novice to the world of photography and its many background options then this book will be worth investing in.
