How-to-GIMP.com is a site dedicated to the free photo editing software – GIMP. Site creator, Kat Landreth has already added plenty of content to help beginners who want to know how to use GIMP and now she's gone one step further by creating a downloadable book that GIMP users can learn from.
Titled Before and After: A Beginner's Guide to Free photo Editing in GIMP it's a comprehensive guide to what GIMP is and how you can use it successfully to edit photos. As well as the book, you're also given access to the How-to-GIMP.com site for a year, so you can watch GIMP tutorials as well as download free content such as brushes.
Back to the book, the first chapter is an interesting read as it explains why the author put the book together and what makes it different to other books out there. The explanations on how the layout of the book works is a nice touch too as it means the reader shouldn't be confused by the design or miss anything important when they start working through it.
With chapters dedicated to the set-up and layout of GIMP, Kat has really started right from the beginning so if you've never opened up GIMP before you should grasp a basic understanding of where everything is and how important tools work. The book then looks at specific tools / actions in more detail in further chapters.
Tutorials are easy to follow and simple to understand. They're all set out well and the use of screen grabs from the software further add to the explanations given, making it easier for the reader to find the areas of the software relevant to that tutorial on their own machines.
It's a great guide that really does tick lots of boxes and for $12, it won't break the bank either.
