Digital Photography Step by Step is a guide which aims to provide a practical and inspiring guide for newcomers to digital photography and is targeted at the absolute beginner.
The book is softback, has 176 pages and includes the following chapters:
An Introduction to Digital
Hardware Made Easy
Point and Click
The Digital Darkroom
Masterclass Tips
Proving the Pudding
Starting with the very basics of photography including an overview of the history, how digital cameras compare to film and an explanation of pixels, the book is well laid out with diagrams and illustrations to demonstrate each concept. It is written in a very simple and straightforward manner without assuming any knowledge on the part of the reader and in that respect would be a good choice for those who are just starting out in photography or those who have changed to digital from film.
While the text is fairly well written, the pictures used as examples are generally quite dull and uninspiring and look like they have been taken straight from a stock image website. The cover of the book is also rather dull, written in big (patronising) childlike letters and looks like the same as any other Collins book in the series. What it does is provide an overview of the basics but only an overview. Readers will soon outgrow the book and it could have benefited from discussing the aspects in a little more depth. It really is just an introduction.
